Subject: [fb-exchange] Dublin tech club notes
Tech club notes Dublin
Welcome to the Dublin tech club. I am your lucky victim/ note taker for today
We had a number of interesting topics that were discussed today.
14 participants attended meeting today.
Cearbhall brought up the news that Peter O’tool is leaving fighting blindness
for NCBI. Declan wants to reassure everyone that their would not be a loss of
service because of this change. Discussion of different blindness groups
commenced after this including the history of NCBI.
Martin mentioned that he got his meter replaced and that the man who did it
was very pleasant. Discussion of blind tennis commenced with the two players
Martin and Stuart promising to play a game during the year if they get a
chance. Martin clarified when the national league of the blind got itss
start. The Irish association of the blind was brought up with mention that
they were the group that provided brail books while the blind league was a
trade union for workshops for the blind in the past. Discussion of other
disability associations were mentioned such as groups for deaf people. More
discussion of what Peter’s role will be in NCBI was brought up. Cearbhall
talked about his history with NCBI. Martin clarified that the new meter was
for ESB.
Martin asked about the one step reader new name for KNFB reader. More
discussions of other scanning apps and how much better they are in comparison
to knfb reader was brought up. Hopes that it will be improved to a new
standard in the future were raised.
Joe brought up the shell phone and that that it was not compatible with 5g in
the states. Cearbhall gave Joe some help with exiting out of menues in zoom
using a backwards z to get out of menues. Joe had difficulty with this.
Enquiries were made into when 5 g would be rolled out in Ireland, some people
said it was already there.
Martin mentioned that seeing unseen was Friday at 2 o’clock from derry. 5th
march at 2 o’clock audio described in the abbey teatre is also an event that
will be happening. Joe had zoom questions about how to use zoom on a PC. He
can’t hear audio. Declan said which audio device zoom was using, joe uses
jaws. Declan said that he needs to tab around until he hears audio settings,
then enter that and select microphone. Select same as system in that area for
all options. An audio device is the port where equipment such as headphones
are plugged into or a web camera with its own microphone. Some jokes about
ports where mentioned at this time.
Cearbhall mentioned that voice over volume can be controlled from the rotar
on the iphone it is separate from the volume from an iphone and audio can be
switched between two headphones through the audio settings under voice over
in the accessibility settings. Joe was still stuck with zoom Declan gave
himhelp with more backwards z action. Stuart suggested turning off voice over
and press somewhere on the screen to close the menu he is stuck in. a 3
finger sipe from left to right was suggested by cearbhall. Joe left and re
entered the meeting.
Michael asked about areals during the storm and if people’s survived the
storm. He also asked about safari and a quick way of exiting a page quickly
and entering a new address. Stuart mentioned the clear button to the right of
the address bar.
Mary asked about audible subscription and shopping. She was having problems
switching between audible.com and audible.co.uk. it used to be easier.
Cearbhall mentioned that the territory issue was the issue and that audible
was messing around recently. Other people did not have this issue. Declan has
his kindle logged in on .com and audible on .uk he does not have this issue
as a result. Tom asked about changing voices in kindle. Declan lost his
kindle. Go into keyboard and language and download additional voices their.
Tom asked about the voice james in voice dream and using it in other apps.
Stuart clarified that this voice couldn’t be done. Sharing audio was brought
up Michael wanted to share an audio file with others. Only the host can share
audio in zoomm. The host has to enable screen sharing to change this. Declan
said that you can do this if your co-host or on the Pc tab to enable multiple
users option. Eamon asked about tabing on kindle. Declan said that you can
use Alexa to do this. Eamon asked about a tutorial for voice view for kindle.
Declan said that their was no need for one due to its function as a book
reader. Discussion of the costs of kindels and the number of adds present.
Declan said he would come back once he found it in a few weeks.
John asked about podcasts and android and a replacement for talk back. Declan
said their was 3 alternatives for talk back he recommended trying them to see
what they were like but not switching over to them full time. The podcast was
blind guys talk teck. The alternative speech software was called CSR. It
will be on the play store in the future. John listened to it on his google
home mini. The episode was 3 weeks ago. Declan discussed that creating a
screen reader was difficult.
Declan needs a proper phone and has ordered 2 new ones. His new phones are
coming from the UK and Hong Kong. He doesn’t like the keyboards or iphones or
androids, he prefers android because of its customisibility. Widgets were
discussed. Wigets are a window into an app. For example calender widgets
allow you to see the date.
Tom asked about making folders in e-mail on the iphone. He was given the
answer which was to select use edit in the top right then select new mailbox
in the bottom right of the screen. Just name your folder then place the
folder in the category you want after that. He wanted to save zoom links in a
folder so he wouldn’t lose them. This topic was discussed for a while.
Dissussion of how many history links can be stored in the zoom apps it the
number 10 was mentioned. Declan suggested copy the link that says zoom link
and e-mailing it to yourself so you can save it.
Gerard asked about streams of e-mail. He was given a lot of different pieces
of advice to solve this issue. Cearbhall suggested using the screen reader
search to solve this issue. Jaws key F for jaws. Significant attention was
given to this topic.
Mary suggested people should respond to the note takers and that the sender
should respond generally to everyone instead of a individual thanks to each
person individually. Debate commenced on the suggestion Tom asked Michael
about a discussion he had with a womanabout the Orcam . Tom spoke to the lady
doing the art gallery demonstrations from the Hugh lane gallery. He was
having problems accessing the links provided. Gerard brought up saving the
link in note pad concerns were raised that the link may become broken if this
was done. Tom asked if the abbey will continue putting shows on zoom, they
have stopped doing this according to Martin. Martin said he would enquire
whether the 5th of march show would be recorded on zoom to be sure.
Discussion of Martin’s age commenced, for a while. Bob asked about the
difference between searching on windows and your pc. He was told to tab after
he entered the search box to find where you want to search. I received a
thanks for taking these extensive notes from Tom and everyone else.
Mary asked about searching on You tube. When she exits a video she jumps to
the top of the screen instead of staying on the option she already entered.
Cearbhall suggested using the next button. Martin says he uses you tube on
the blindshell.
Martin was getting hungry at this point he brought cheese and indian food up
for some reason. The cheese was discussed, it was discovered that this
particular cheese was made from water buffalo not cow. This was an odd
conversation, cearbhall said something about a high pitch cow. Bob found the
speling of the cheese somewhere. Alexa was consulted for clarification on the
spelling and an incredient list. Alexa revealed that it actually was a
cottage cheese that came from either a cow or a buffalo.
The meeting ended
.
What a meeting.
Stuart Haxell.
