Dublin Technology Notes, 14th August 2023 Good morning, everyone. It's me
here in Dublin today, taking notes on the most recent technology club meeting
that occurred this morning. So, sit back and enjoy the read.

The meeting began with a conversation about the challenges of moving houses.
Some participants shared their experiences, noting it can be especially tough
if you've lived in one place for a long time.
Annette mentioned she had issues with the voice-over on her phone while in
Galway. By toggling the voice-over off and then on again, she resolved the
issue.
There was a brief discussion about football and miscellaneous non-technology
topics.
Vera inquired about adding cards to the Wallet app on her iPhone. She was
unable to add her Leap card to the app. Several members offered suggestions.
They found it odd, especially since it's possible to add a COVID certificate.
Albert mentioned he had faced similar problems and shared his solution.
Aoibheann, representing Fighting Blindness, joined the meeting to gather
suggestions for fundraising events the group would like to see, The group
proposed ideas such as cycles, marathons, sponsored walks, and coffee
mornings. If an app were developed for these events, its accessibility should
be ensured. Eamon asked if Fighting Blindness had ever fundraised outside of
supermarkets. Aoibheann confirmed they had. Martin suggested showcasing
accessible technology in their offices, similar to the Sight and Sound
Technology nationwide tour. He also mentioned a recent RTE segment about
Irish blind and visually impaired tennis players heading to Birmingham for
the World Games. A link will be shared in a follow-up email.
Albert shared his positive experience with the Hable One, preferring it over
the Revio.
Joe inquired about ChatGPT. Stuart provided an overview. To access it online
search for the website typing in chat GPT and if you want an app there is one
available on both android and apple devices. Cearbhall offered a more
technical explanation. Mary pondered the potential for technology to make
people mentally complacent. Cearbhall noted that its popularity has dropped
to 4 percent. Eamon shared his experience with an app called call Annie. He
was worried about accidentally providing personal data to apps such as GPT.
Albert mentioned that those who registered for the Be My Eyes beta might get
access soon. He recommended a podcast on AppleVis about the topic. Martin
asked if the podcast could be played on Alexa, to which Albert advised saying
"Anypod" followed by the podcast number.
Mary planned to discuss Vera's card issue with her later.
Martin managed to play the ChatGPT podcast using Alexa. The discussion about
the increasing dependence on technology and its implications took center
stage for a while. Mary described a plank exercise, and the group discussed
various at-home workouts. Contrary to the popular 10,000-step goal, Eamon
suggested that 4,000 steps might be sufficient.
Tom expressed disappointment with his Bookshare experience. He also discussed
voice preferences, like James in Voice Dream and Brian on the OrCam. The
OrCam, particularly its smart reading feature, was a focal point of Tom's
praise as he recently started utilising it to read his local paper.
Hearing aids became a topic of discussion. Albert uses Phonak hearing aids
from Switzerland, though there are more affordable options available through
the HSE.
The group also discussed autonomous vehicles, including trials of driverless
buses in Scotland and cars in Phoenix, USA.
Tom inquired about lighter versions of long canes, as the ones from NCBI are
heavy. Guide dogs and Amazon were suggested as alternatives.
Eamon brought up concerns about the Apple Wallet and its security. Mary
clarified that it requires Face ID and a six-digit passcode for access. Tom
had issues with Face ID, and he was advised to check his screen settings,
specifically the "Auto Lock" under "Display and Brightness."
Eamon was satisfied with a previous answer about folders. Ger questioned if
Siri could navigate to the Auto Lock settings.
Stuart explained to Mary how to add a Seeing AI shortcut to Siri. To do this
open the app locate menu, settings and then configure Siri shortcut.
Similarly, the "Be My Eyes" app can also be integrated with Siri.
Albert and Cearbhall had a discussion about the Hable One but it was a bit
unclear to the note-taker, but Albert seemed very satisfied with it.
The meeting concluded with members heading out for lunch.
