Dublin Technology Club Notes 2nd October 2023
Good morning, it's me, the note taker, here to provide you with a summary of
the Dublin Technology Club meeting that took place on the 2nd of October. Can't
believe it's nearly time for Halloween already. Sit back and enjoy the read.
Apologies given.
11 participants
3 early birds joined the meeting early. Vera asked Stuart how to add a profile
picture to Zoom. Jackie advised going to "More," selecting your name, and
choosing "Profile Picture." This led to a discussion on how to join a Zoom
meeting, including joining by history and joining by a link.
Martin inquired about Be My AI. He mentioned that it keeps beeping when he
tries to take a picture. Jackie explained that it's due to the influx of new
users recently. This spurred a discussion on Be My AI in general. Ann Marie
asked what beta testing involves. Stuart clarified that it's used to identify
any bugs and issues before a software product is released to the public.
Participants shared their feedback on the app overall; they are very satisfied
with the quality of descriptions it provides to users. It was compared to
Seeing AI and other image description apps.
A brief discussion about guide dogs and their varying behaviors ensued. Jackie
expressed her admiration for Be My AI’s ability to read text and translate it
into English, citing an instance of it translating from Turkish to English. The
group was quite impressed. Eamon mentioned he used it to describe a person on
television.
Mary inquired if anyone had updated to iOS 17, mentioning she was encountering
a focusing bug with VoiceOver. Stuart reported losing Siri functionality
entirely and hopes for a resolution soon.
Tom shared issues with the RTE app, noting it resolves whenever he opens the
BBC Radio app. This led to a discussion about the apps, though no conclusive
reason for Tom’s issue was determined. Paudie hypothesized that the apps might
be conflicting with each other. Tom also shared a story about using Be My Eyes
to describe his family members.
Declan visited and informed the group about the upcoming Sight and Sound
Roadshow taking place this month on the following dates: 9th October at TU
Dublin in the Central Quad, 10th October at Waterford Dooley Hotel, 11th
October at the Guide Dogs Centre in Cork, and 12th October at Connacht Hotel in
Galway, from 2 to 7 on all those dates. He also mentioned a webinar on
Wednesday with Sight and Sound featuring Fighting Blindness on AMD, and will be
distributing the link to the FB list.
Mary questioned about the technology to be showcased at the event. Jackie said
a broad spectrum of technology will be on display.
Tom shared some insights about Bookshare, stating that you can now access their
collection easily through Voice Dream, which also now offers all Voice Dream
voices for free.
The note taker had to depart at this point. Hope everyone enjoyed the read
today.
Regards,
The Note Taker
