Subject: [fb-exchange] Dublin technology notes 25th April 2022
Dublin Technology club Notes 25thApril 2022.
Good evening, everyone who might glance at these notes briefly before deleting
them I hope they give you a decent idea of what happened this morning in the
Dublin technology club.
11 participants joined us today.
Todays tech club started off in fine form with participants having problems
with their audio including the note taker today. Vera wished Cearbhall
happy birthday and discussion commenced on his upcoming trip to
the lovely city of Rome. More people wished Cearbhall happy birthday,
eventually the audio issues were sorted out.
Martin made a wrong guess on Cearbhall’s age. Cearbhall asked how many steps
were in the Spanish steps, various answers were given from thirty-two to a lot
more. They are apparently very shallow. We all listened to Cearbhall doing the
attendance for a while with his very fast JAWS. We were wondering where
everyone was by eleven, some thought they were on easter holidays.
Annette brought up an issue with google home where it kept asking to connect to
her Wi-Fi. She was told by family members to unplug and re plug it in again.
This fixed the issue. Vera said this was called a reboot. She explained that it
was similar to what she does to her television when it has problems.
Annette brought the sad news of a woman dying from swimming over the weekend.
She was out when she heardthe helicopter flying over to rescue her. The area
where it happened is very dangerous.
Martin brought up an RTE issue he said that it was unavailable in the mornings
on his Alexa, vera said she had the same issue on her google home. Albert also
agreed with them saying that it was a problem. Albert asked about Cearbhalls
upcoming trip to Rome. Albert said that he had a lot of problems navigating
because of the cobble stones. He also said that there was a lot of maps done in
brail. He mentioned various sites he visited on his last trip to Rome including
the pantheon and the colosseum. He has no interest in going back to Rome in the
future again.
Vera said that the first thing she noticed on her last trip to Rome was that
all the people were on their mobile phones in the nineties. Her tour guide was
very passionate about the city. Martin said that the Dublin tour guides are
just as passionate. He then asked for a full report on Cearbhall’s trip next
week.
Martin suggested using soundscape while their whilst Albert suggested utilising
Blind square on Cearbhall’s trip to Rome. Albert says that he only used his
phone at night and not during the day while in Rome the last time he visited.
Vera said that a significant number of the Italians who lived in Rome were
standing at counters in cafés in Rome and if you sat down, you were charged
double price.
Michael had a problem with Microsoft word apparently the print has gone small
for his wife. If you go into the font settings, they are still size eleven.
Cearbhall suggested opening screen settings in word and checking the screen
size there. Michael says that he thought it was something to do with pictures
in word. Martin agreed with Cearbhall that he should check the screen settings.
Albert suggested zoom settings. Michael said he’ll check the zoom settings,
Cearbhall suggested checking display settings as an alternative in word under
view. Albert said that you need to be careful when you adjust settings in
Microsoft word as there are hundreds of them.
Martin brought up Alexa because he has recently tried the options to access the
higher-level features and now, he can’t back out of it. He wants to get back
to basic functions. He asked if there was a help line, Albert said he would
have a look in the echo group. Tom tried to bring up something before being
interrupted by martin saying, “up Mayo!!!!!â€â€ Tom then confirmed that
there was an Alexa help line. He said try entering the help option on Alexa to
find it. Martin and Tom bantered about mayo for a while.
Albert brought the tv guide app up that was discussed on Saturday in the cork
tech club he said the app has still not been fixed. Stuart brought up that they
test beta versions of apps on the app Test flight.
Tom brought up blindsquare and mobile apps he said that he walked and that
blindsquare did not work for him. He mentioned that another app can link with
blindsquare apparently the app he was thinking about only works in America
currently according to Albert. Discussion of blind square commenced for a
while. Blind square did not work for a few people recently including Cearbhall
and Tom. Albert says that it doesn’t do turn by turn unless you link it with
google maps, comparisons to soundscape were made. Cearbhall mentioned that he
used move it another app in the countryside. he was provided with the names of
a number of villages he had never heard about before. Tom asked how to link
google and blind square together, Albert told him how to do it. He mentioned
that voice over, google maps and blind square all vied for your attention when
this is done. Cearbhall enquired about a tutorial for blind square, Albert
mentioned that a German woman did one before and that she had good English
he wasn’t sure if it was a podcast.
Tom said that he was at home at the moment. Albert explained to Vera about the
various gps apps that many of the blind use for navigation including blind
square and soundscape. The clue app was briefly discussed today. Tom asked
about the Waterford v limerick match and if anyone had watched it. A number of
people had. the notetaker had not.
JAWS joined us for a period of time and gave a brief news highlight of some
very interesting news stories. The note taker recalls something involving a
million euros. Tom mentioned scribe for books. Apparently if you read a book on
it you have to close the app to get back to the place you were in the book.
John said that android is going well for him at the moment. Cearbhall asked
Michael if blind square worked with android, he was not sure. Blind square does
not help him because of his location in a rural area. Cearbhall said that move
it was a better alternative for rural locations and can be connected to google
maps. Discussion continued on blind square for a while after this point as well
as four square the app blind square is built upon.
John asked how good google maps is for walking around. Various different
opinions were given. Cearbhall said he didn’t find blind square worked for
him in his local area because of the number of shops. Michael said that some of
the shops blindsquare mentions in his area don’t exist. Martin had a
conversation with the post man while this discussion was going on. Albert
doesn’t think blindsquare is available for android.
Bob looked and could not find it in the android app store. he does not use
navigation apps himself. He said he would only occasionally check the steps to
get to a location if he was in Dublin. Michael said that using the eircode was
the best way of finding places. In England eircodes cover multiple locations
while in Ireland they cover one property according to Michael. Discussion of
the eircodes commenced for a while.
Tom said that the app he got books from was spelt scribd not scribe. It
requires monthly subscription. Cearbhall enquired as to where the app acquired
its books such as audible or Belinda. Carol asked about the recent borrow box
problem, multiple people were caught with the problem and were required to
contact their local library to fix the problem. Cearbhall said he recently
downloaded the book Nora, Annette said she did the same, Tom brought up James
Joyce. Cearbhall said he couldn’t finish the book as it did not hold his
interest. John asked about what borrow box was, Cearbhall gave him an
explanation.
Annette said she wanted to reserve a book on borrow box and did not know how.
Cearbhall said that you could not reserve them. Tom said that you were only
allowed a certain number of books at a time between three and five books. Tom
asked if anyone had used overdrive, Cearbhall said he found it awful. Tom said
he used bookshare and found it good. Cearbhall said he used to use bookshare
because they used to brail books. Tom brought up how college students find
bookshare to be very good. Albert asked Tom about his personal use of bookshare.
Tom mentioned that he found apps such as invision, seeing AI etc to be very
good. Albert said that invision provided frequent updates similar to OrCam.
Bob asked what speakers people were using. Tom uses a sound bar and a samson.
He has the soundbar blue toothed to Alexa. Michael said his friend uses sonar
speakers. Michael mentioned a few different versions of speakers he uses
himself. John highlighted a number of ways in which newer speakers are a lot
more powerful than the older ones. Tom said the old speakers give of a better
sound “more authenticâ€.
Martin was shopping yesterday and discovered Bluetooth speakers that were quite
expensive and was wondering about the quality of them, he did not purchase
them. Discussion on Bluetooth continued for a short while and how the speakers
could connect to alexa. Cearbhall says that he uses a lightning connector to
connect some of his devices. Discussion got very technical. Martin said he was
impressed with the quality of the sound that comes out of his alexa. Cearbhall
asked if tom played the organ, he said he played a mouth organ. Tom said that
he was told that he is the only guy that can sing a song in sixteen different
keys. Martin asked Tom to put his name in the kettle for some reason.
Albert has got an apple watch and is trying to get used of it. He is impressed
with how fast it charges. His watch matches Lady W’s. they both are massive
Disney fans.
Tom asked if he is using his headphones and moves around the house and leaves
his phone somewhere else would the quality of phone calls decrease, he was told
yes. It was suggested that the turn of his wi-fi to improve this. Annette
suggested doing a whats app call instead. Estimates for the distance Bluetooth
devices can go before they disconnect were made from twenty feet down to
fifteen feet depending on the device were hypothesised. Annette finds that
what’s app calls are very hard to hear if she is not using Wi-Fi to receive
calls. Albert asked how she used what’s app she said that she uses headphones
and without headphones. She has taken calls in multiple locations and has
noticed a stark difference. What’s app apparently works very badly over
mobile data. Annette asked how to tell if she was using data or Wi-Fi. Vera
said that she should check her settings to see what she is using. Vera said
that data will engage automatically if Wi-Fi is poor. Cearbhall said that Wi-Fi
c an be affected by the number of people using it at the same time.
John mentioned that he had problems with Wi-fi when he was with a different
company. Mini mouse interrupted to give us the time at twelve thirty-two.
Albert wished Cearbhall happy birthday. Cearbhall asked albert if he was
wearing “slippered pantaloonsâ€â€
The meeting broke up at this point. The note taker hopes that those on the FB
exchange list found these notes to be beneficial.
Regards
The Notetaker.
