Dublin Technology club Notes 9th January 2022
Good morning and happy new year. This morning we had the first Dublin
technology club meeting of 2023. So sit back and relax and enjoy the notes of
the meeting.

The pre meeting started of with a number of eager participants signing in
early to the meeting and having a number of random discussions. Some of them
included facial hair and the benefits of having a beard and how many walks
people would do a day with their dogs. These discussions commenced for a
while at the beginning of the meeting. The topic of how much it takes to look
after a dog was discussed.
Martin asked if it was a good idea to put an RF tag on a dog and if it would
effect the dog in any way. The group concluded it wouldn’t. The group
wondered if it worked by bluetooth. Mary asked if a Navi LENS tag would work,
stuart suggested an apple air tag.The group started talking about Christmas
at this point and Martin regaled the group with his culinary experience of
the recent Christmas period. Martin told us that a turkey leg cost 8 euro
when he last checked in his butchers recently. The fighting blindness choir
was discussed and the competition that they are currently taking part in,
they are performing this Saturday in the Helix in the semi finals.
According to Martin something called CES is currently taking place in los
vegas, it is a big technology convention that takes place every January. Tom
mentioned that Clare Burn was discussing a chat bot this morning. The group
discussed the benefits of them and what they can be used for. One of the
topics discussed around them was the possibility that they could be used to
write future. Fiction books.
Cearbhall mentioned that he was fiddling with borrow box over the weekend. He
was surprised that it had voices that could be used to read e-books like
voice dream reader. Tom said he liked the voice that his orcam uses for
reading. Cearbhall said he had 3 voices going through borrow box at once at
one point.
Tom asked if anyone had connected Alexa to headphones. Stuart said he found
it difficult to do. Initially. The group discussed this for a while.
Cearbhall asked if tom had downloaded the app to his phone, he had. BBC
according to tom will be discontinuing their service on the smart speaker
later in the year. This was a surprise to a number of members of the group.
They also discussed what radio stations they regularly use on there Alexa’s.
Cearbhall brought up simple radio and that all RTE stations do not play on
the app anymore. The RTE radio app is very good according to Cearbhall. The
group then moved to talking about audio description for a while. Some members
were not sure of the benefits of audio description.Stuart and tom are big
fans of it.. the group then started talking about different television
providers and which ones members of the group were with which one. Some are
with sky and some others are with virgin. Audio description was a big topic
discussed today. Some of the group gave there first experiences with audio
description.
Cearbhall asked if anyone had any problems with iOS 16.2. no one had any
problems to report. Zoom apparently has also gained a number of new features
on the mobile version including the ability for multiple people to contribute
to text. Martin asked if you could dictate emogies. He was told yes he could.
Tom also brought up the recent e-mail from Jackie that mentioned that you
can ask Siri to restart your phone. The group discussed it for a while and
the benefits of it.
Mary asked what note pad is. Cearbhall said it is similar to notes on the
iPhone. If you copy something from word into note pad it will remove all
formatting, Cearbhall uses it with excel as well when he has problems with
formulas. To find it open windows and type note pad to find it.
Cearbhall brought up cutting and pasting on an iPhone, he recently had to put
in a password in Alexa, he copied and pasted one from whats app and found it
really good.
Tom asked a question about losing the home screen on zoom. Cearbhall said to
do a backwards z on an iPhone with two fingers to return to a previous
screen. This one needs a bit of practice to get working correctly.
Stuart said he uses the accessibility shortcut on the iPhone to temporarily
turn off voice over and tap the top of the screen in zoom if he gets stuck in
a window that won’t close.
To activate the shortcut open settings, accessibility,, then scroll down to
accessibility shortcut near the bottom. Scroll down until you find voice
over. Double tap it if it says selected you’ve done it. Make sure nothing
else is selected otherwise it will bring up a menu instead of automatically
turning voiceover on or off. To use the shortcut triple click your home
button or side button if you don’t have a home button.
Cearbhall asked if anyone was having problems with sound scape recently after
Microsoft stopped supporting the service. It has been awful for him recently.
Martin said he had no issues with it, he said he will give it another test
when he is in Dublin next week..
The meeting ended at this point with the group deciding to go off for some
lunch. Happy new year to every one and good luck to Mary and the choir this
weekend.
