Hello Folks, Well, we are in the midst of storm Debbie.
It's affecting some people, Like Albert, who has several power outages.
Nevertheless, life goes on and we had a smaller meeting than usual, due to
the showing of a video by Fighting Blindness.
Anew member joined us today called Brian, and we all introduced ourselves to
him and he to us.
Welcome Brian to our tech club.
However we had a very big attendance , there were 17 participants including
Clare who showed us the video.
The video was very gentle, and showed us a little story about a lovely child
born blind in the Cork area.
His mother talked about her child, and told us of the difficulties of
instructing and educating a very small child.
She had another young child fully sited who took to drinking from her cup,
without any bother, while the vision impaired struggled to grasp the
concept of drinking from a cup, which he could not see.
The video lasted about 5 minutes, and had some nice light music to create
the right atmosphere.
The video is aimed at fund raisers and people interested in getting cures
for all forms of vision loss.
We were asked as a group for what are thoughts were on the video and it's
message. Some people did not like the music , that it took away from the
message. Another suggestion was to consider audio description to accompany
the video.
Adrian confirmed that one can put audio description on U Tube videos.
Personally I liked the video, and thought it charming, not selling anything
and that the music added to the charm of the story.
It would one feels, create an interest in people to take an active part in
finding cures for vision loss.
The video was not strident but softly displayed leading one thinks to much
more awareness of vision impaired peoples problems.
Paul said that it would go down well on a programme like Nationwide on RTE 1
or as some suggested , a discussion on the Joe Duffy radio programme.
There was a good discussion on the various transport apps. Mary uses Next
bus, and finds this good, while Albert likes MOOVIT.
Paul complained about the new TFI (transport for Ireland ) app. He used to to
use the wonderful Dublin Bus app, having some Bus stop entered on his app as
his favourites.
It was easy to use , he could get the times of the next 3 busses, and knew
what bus stop he was at all times.
There was talk of some buses being discontinued like the number 18 and the
83.
Not sure whether many people think that the bus connect is any improvement
on the capitols transport system.
Cearbhall complaine that Soundscape (Scottish version is not giving him
correct directions.
He went down around a corner which he knew well, but the directions called
out where not correct. By the soundscape app.
Adrian suggested shaking his phone to re establish correct directions.
Mary like the Blind Square app the best and uses it regularly without any
major problems.
Adrian told us of a great app called City Mapper. It can work in any major
capital city, like Paris, and is a great help to vision impaired persons.
Also it's great for using the Underground system in London.
Marti, complained that her e mails formerly from the NCBI, and now from
Vision Ireland (vi), were now going into her spam folder.
This thought Cearbhall and Adrian was due to the name change.
Paul said that she can move the mail from her spam folder and place it in her
inbox. This alerts Google that this mail is not spam, and can be delivered to
her inbox in future.
Also there is an option to change this to not spam for the future.
Marti will look at this and report back to the meeting.
