Declan was happy to demonstrate a new microphone and was delighted to hear
that he was sounding better than usual.
Martha said that she had joined Disney plus on a temporary basis to see the
"Artemis Fowl" film. She found the app inaccessible until Jackie explained
how to make it accessible. The problem was that opening the app from the
film download, gave a screen without any control buttons. Jackie showed her
how to make them appear and the app remained fully accessible from then on.
Pat pointed out that when you change your App Store settings, ( Going to
Settings> [your name] > iTunes & App Store, and with the intention of
Automatically downloading apps purchased on your other Apple devices, the
selection applies to all your devices when you set it on your iPad but when
you set this option on the iPhone, it does not extend to the other Apple
devices.
Ken remarked that he used always deal in cash but now he finds it safer to
use his card so that he is not handling coins and paper. This led to a group
discussion and it was agreed that the AIB app is very accessible on the
phone. Other bank apps where not reported.
Jackie said that she prefers to use her Revolut card for transactions as this
controls the amount she can use and gives a detailed report of immediate
transactions. Revolut is an app that can be downloaded from the App store or
from The Google Play or App Store. The app is available for Apple Watches,
iPhones or iPads with iOS 11 or newer, and a virtual card can be ordered
(that's impossible to misplace) the same way you would order a physical one.
Simply go to the 'Cards' section in the app, select 'Virtual' and choose a
virtual card. This card will instantly appear in your app and can be used for
online purchases only. You can have up to 5 virtual cards.
Pat pointed out that this card uses near feel communication. A user worried
about personal hygiene, in these days of the Corona virus, Could put a
disposable hanky around the card.
Jackie wanted to know how to set Outlook to only show her name in the from
field of an email without her actual email address. Declan found the answer
in his vast store of knowledge and explained the steps involved.
In Outlook, choose File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
Select the email account that you want to change, and then choose Change
Some members reported that Microsoft's Narrator is fairly ok now and reading
some parts of the screen more clearly than JFW. Cortana was mentioned as a
built in voicing service as part of Windows.
Derry asked how he might stop the iPhone from reporting every bit of
punctuation. Jackie explained that he needed to move the rotor to punctuation
verbosity and set it to "Some" as this would make Voiceover pause on
punctuation without actually voicing it. Pat observed that this could also be
set in the rotor settings under accessibility in the Voiceover settings.
Ken made the dramatic announcement that he is going to invest in a new
iPhone! He asked for recommendations of the best model to optimise battery
performance. He would prefer to go for the largest memory size affordable and
a discussion ensued as to which models were made available at the larger
memory sizes.
Elaine reported that she finds that she cannot get out of an email message on
her iPad once she has opened it for reading. After several suggestions which
were of no avail, Ken discovered that she must click on "switch to full
screen mode" to bring her back out of the email to the list view.
A discussion developed about the appearance of the screen on the iPad
compared with the iPhone. On the iPad, people find themselves caught in a
list of items on the left of the screen with no apparent way to move into the
detail of the item. Chris, explained that the iPad is divided into two
unequal frames. On the left is a list of items, such as emails or files, and
on the right two-thirds of the screen the detail of the item is displayed
once it has been opened.
Elaine uses "near field communication " (NFC" tags to identify objects at
home. She explained that these are electronic sticky tags that are linked to
recorded names on her iPhone under Shortcuts. The tags are read by holding
the iPhone camera over the tag. She explained that the process of recording
was somewhat lengthy but that she had a recording of step by step
instructions which Ken offered to make available to anyone on request.
