Bob introduced his latest computer which he bought from a Chinese
manufacturer, Chuwi, which cost half the price of an average PC in Dublin
shops. This model has plenty of USB ports which Bob needs for all his
peripheral devices.
Martin and Bob got into laundry mode and debated the merits of their
respective washing machines. Martin is fond of his Logic machine with its
five pre-sets and bob was promoting the more exotic, Mele machine which is
claimed to be specially developed for blind users.
Annette found that Siri suddenly stopped speaking over the weekend. She made
many attempts to get a reaction from Siri over most of one day but finally
had to restart the phone. This did the trick but she wondered if this was
something that others had experienced. Bert agreed that there are many
reports of trouble with Siri since the latest update to IOS.
Eamonn tried to take part in a Dublin city webinar on Bull Island and was
frustrated to find that he could not connect using his PC. However, he did
manage to get the latter half of the session by connecting with his iPhone.
This raised a question as to the difference between a webinar and a regular
Zoom meeting. Declan explained that the attendees at a webinar are muted by
default while the guest speakers have the use of both the audio and visual
services. The audience can send a chat note to the top table and can be
invited to speak if the webinar host invites them to do so. At a Zoom
meeting, the participants have full access to the audio and visual functions
of Zoom. Incidentally, a Webinar has to be paid for and costs more than a
Zoom meeting. Bert reported that the chat system works fine on a laptop or PC
running JAWS with the help of Zoom scripts from Hartgen Consultancy at
http://www.hartgen.org
Martin reported that the Tesco online shopping service is very difficult to
navigate on the PC. However, the mobile version of the site is quite
comfortable to use. It is strange that the same company handles these two
environments so differently.
Tom and Annette reported that their iPhone screens keeps locking up and
refusing to allow any gestures to work. After a brief discussion, the meeting
felt that the "Auto lock" feature might be responsible. They agreed to review
their settings under "Display and brightness".
With four users of Android systems present, naturally a great part of the
meeting was spent exploring issues relating to this environment.
Surprisingly, the various updates of the Android system are not all available
for all Android phones. The latest upgrade differs for each model. Declan did
explain that, unlike the iPhone, early versions of the Android system are
backwards compatible in Android phones, In other words, earlier version can
be reinstalled on them.
Talkback has changed some of its critical settings and Declan is planning a
training session in the early autumn to bring everyone up to speed.
Eamonn and Martin are involved with the sightless cinema and are exploring
the best use of Gold wave. They find it difficult to make a recording that
captures the voices of all participants. They need to carry out a bit more
research to achieve this. We wish them every success and look forward to
their creative output in a few months time.
Tom is delighted to report that Alexa does work with the ring doorbell. He
and his wife spent the weekend in cahoots with an expert from Egypt sorting
out the difficulties in enabling Alexa and two separate iPhones to operate
the same doorbell. their ears must be ringing!
