Subject: [fb-exchange] FB Exchange Club Notes - 21.09.2020
Attendees: Tom Langan, Joe Murphy, Cearbhall O’Meara, Albert Brown, Noreen
Meagher, Mary Lavelle, Martin Kelly, Gerry Eastwood, Eamonn O’Connor, Bob
Carazza, Annette McCarthy, Joan Kearns, Michael Lavin, Martha Parkenson, Declan
Meenagh.
Apologies Paul Griffith and Michael Brown.
Tom Langan reported that bookshare has a problem with the search function
Declan suggested using the ISBN of the book being searched for. Books are
available in a number of formats. Eamonn asked if you can search by category
and Declan said that using dreamweaver there is a limited category search
facility.
Discussion took place on portable mp3 players with speech including Flextalk,
book port, m-power iAudio5. RockBox is a speech software solution for older
off-the shelf devices to enable speech on them.
Bert reported problems with ios14 - advised to hold off downloading. Some
updates are only effective with iphone10 and above. Mary L downloaded ios14 but
found the numberpad does not display when a call comes in. She found improved
performance with this update. Siri dictation is also more accurate. This
version includes a new feature called backtap where you can get the phone to do
various things like bringing up the home button by tapping the back of the
phone. Another new feature is achieved by doing a long tap – tap once and then
hold down your finger. This will allow you to get back to the Back button at
the top level of a dialogue box for example instead of having to step back
through all the levels. Mary asked if Siri can be changed to differentiate
between the words choir and quire. Bert didn’t think so but suggested trying a
few different Siri voices to see if this made any difference. Bert said that
Apple can sometimes force a new update which you mightn’t want at thi s moment
in time. In Settings you can turn automatic updates off so as to get around
this.
Bert recommended the iPhone SE20 as being good value for money having the
IPhone 11 processor installed. Joan bought a new replacement battery (possibly
not an apple one) but it is still not holding the charge though it is
displaying 100% charged. She has to recharge a number of times a day. The
meeting felt that the battery might npot be an Apple-approved one. Compu B is
now gone so try iConnect instead for any Apple issues available in Henry
Street, Liffey Valley or Newbridge.
A discussion took place on spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music. amazon music
costs €3.99 per month for 1 speaker, or €9 for multiple speakers. Apple music
costs €10 per month. There is no charge for youtube videos.
martha asked about hive or nest -the two smart thermostats that are hard wired
into your central heating boiler. Bert uses nest with google home and he can
turn on or off the boiler remotely with his phone. Visually impaired people in
the UK are usingHhive talking thermostat. Joe will circulate an article on this
from NCBI. Michael said he uses the Speechmaster from Cobalt and finds it very
easy tocontrol the central heating.
A discussion took place on the smart doorbell which can be answered through a
smart phone app. Declan cautioned against disreputable sellers of a system like
this - your doorbell has a camera which is always on line so there would be
security issues involved; suggested that before you purchase this you ensure
that the company is reputable.
Noreen said that one of the first devices she got following losing her sight
was the Colour Identifier from Cobalt. Michael said he had one also and it
could identify if your lights were on or not. Bert said that there was an app
called boop which tells you if your lights are on or off
