In attendance, 11 participants,Ken Walsh, Jackie McBrearty, Chris Egan,
Derry Walsh, Martha Parkinson, noreen Meagher, Stuart Haxell, Cearbhall
OMeadhra, Paul Griffith, PatMcCarthy,Clare Cassidy.
Jackie asked Cearbhall what split words meant on the orbit braille reader.
Cearbhall said Split words would ensure the word is complete. Jackie was
confused as there is something called word wrap, these to options seem to do
the same thing. Split words needs to be off and word wrap on.
So Cearbhall is going to put the explanation to the list.
Paul came on asking Alexa about a software update. There may be an update to
some peoples Alexa devices. people just need to ask Alexa is there a
software update. However on the Echo Show you have to go into the settings
to check for an update.
Derry told us about NCBI running Braille grade1 courses. They have had a
massive uptake for this course. So its great that Braille appears to be
making a come back in some small way.
Clare was saying about watching coronation street on Virgin media with
Audio Description. This started a conversation on different programmes with
AD. People agreed that it can be hit or miss on the Irish channels.
Jackie, Martha and Stuart all said they have the audio description
constantly on with their TV providers. Chris is going to report back if you
can record a programme without AD once you watch it again can you turn on
AD. We look forward to hearing does this work.
Paul Went on at 6am to check his balance on his Bank of Ireland app. When
Paul inserted his three digits the app crashed. When his wife tried to log
in it took ages for her to transfer money into Jackie's account. Paul was
advised to delete the app. This made things even worse. According to the
bank There is an issue with the app but the fix seemed to be turn off WIFI
and use mobile data. When Paul did this he was able to log in.
This started another discussion about the AIB and BOI app Jackie said the
Bank of Ireland app is messy but the Allied Irish bank app is much more
straight forward.
Cearbhall explained the difference between Wi-Fi and mobile data networks.
He is going to send an explanation on this to the mailing list.
Stuart brought up about IOS 15 which is getting released on Monday. There
is new accessibility features coming up and the major changes will only work
on the iPhone X and above. We spoke about accessibility features on the
iPhone and emergency SOS.
Jackie and Stuart both said how they have called emergency services by
accident when switching off their phones. Chris said that voiceover seems to
go to emergency sos when VO is on and when VO is off then it goes to switch
off. So people need to be careful when switching off their devices.
Cearbhall asked us all who was using windows 10. There has been an update,
both Jackie and Martha agreed they need to pull their laptops out before
they will require Microsoft be my eyes support. There is a new thing called
feeds this is a new feature to give you what your interested in. This
shows news articles etc. shift tab gets rid of it but it will be back when
you turn on your computer.
Cearbhall asked about what typing mode he should use for WhatsApp. When he
is responding to a message in a group he finds that the keyboard loses
focus. Everyone said to do standard typing. Stuart said about replying to
an individual message, he said to go to the message and swipe down and
double tap on reply.
This started a chat on whatsapp announcing when you've exited a group. So
the work around is muting the group permanently rather than suffering the
wrath of leaving a group.
Martha informed us all if you ring the Department of social protection, you
now get through to a central call centre rather than your local office.
Paul was enquiring again on how to retrieve emails from his archive in
Outlook. Cearbhall has posted the steps on how to do this to the list.
The meeting ended.
All the best,
Ken
