Cork technology notes 24th September 2022
GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE IT IS ME THE NOTE TAKER HEARE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE
MINUTES OF OUR LATEST CORK TECHNOLOGY MEETING. SO, SIT Back and enjoy the
read.
6 participants
Apologies were received from those who could not make it this morning.
The meeting started early with 4 participants discussing the weather and IOS
16. IOs 16.2 has recently been released with fixes for voice over bugs, in
particular it fixes voice over not turning on when restarting your iphone
which may reassure those who are reluctant to download the newest IOS update.
Apparently, some members have seen some very hot winters of 17 degrees. A few
of our members have gone on holidays this week between Tenerife, turkey, and
various other places. A few members discussed a particular iPhone bug
involving the app switcher not opening. Stuart fixed this issue by restarting
his phone. Some members are still cautious of updating STILL. 15.7 also came
out with IOS 16.
Paul told us about an app he uses for his walking group. If he sends out a
group SMS to the group, he is the only one who can see the replies he prefers
this over what’s app, it is only 1 euro to purchase. He can send a message to
at least 50 people with it. IT ALSO BOASTS A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT FEATURES
THAT MAKE it IDEAL FOR HIS GROUP. Group SMS is the name of the app if anyone
is curious to try it.
Joanne has a family member who has recently lost an I phone. Her family
member wants to get his apple ID he cannot get it because he can not
authentic it without the phone. She was advised to maybe try getting apple to
send the codes through e-mail. The group was unsure if this would work
because of data protection. A lot of discussion of how apple can clear and
lock a phone commenced for a small period of time here. she was also advised
to maybe call apple accessibility as an alternative to calling apple more
directly. Pat suggested opening settings on her own phone and try looking at
her iCloud to see if she was sharing data with him, it did not work
unfortunately when she tried this.
Paul asked about the TV app ken helped make accessible. He wanted to know how
to move from station to station instead of going through them individually.
Unfortunately, no one had a solution to this question. Brief discussion of
the recent Italy vs England match commenced here. Italy won. The back button
was causing problems in general to for a few participants.
Stuart brought up a new feature he recently discovered to find WI fi
passwords. To do this you open WI fi settings in your I phone their will be
an edit button on the top right of the screen tap this. You will either be
asked for a password or face ID at this point. In this menu you are able to
view every WI fi network you have ever connected to on your iPhone. To view
their passwords, scroll down then access your rotor then switch it to
actions, select more information than double tap, you are brought to a screen
where you can scroll down to an option called password. You need to double
tap this option, then single tap and voice over will read out the password of
that particular WI fi network. you can tap phones together and use QR codes
to log into WI fi networks as well.
Joanne asked about the new Sky glass TV. You do not need a sky box with this
TV apparently. It is 42 euro a month to use it. Some members were wondering
what the catch with them is. A few members currently use sky q boxes and find
them to work fine still. Discussion of modems and WI fi came up here again. .
Different providers were compared with the pros and cons discussed.
The benefits of deleting I phone apps to save memory was discussed as well as
family sharing as an alternative approach was discussed. .
Derry mentioned that he recently received an email saying that his phone
provider is going to increase the price of his landline and WI fi. He was
advised to give them a call or research some alternative providers to
discover if he could find a better price somewhere else. He was told he could
choose to opt into the things he wanted as opposed to those he did not want,
for example only WI fi and no landline or TV. He was provided with a number
of different providers. For those interested here is a few contact details
for those who might want them.

He was also told to maybe call his provider and tell them he is possibly
considering moving they may consider dropping the price to keep him as a
customer.
A voice over bug was discussed. It was that the speech rate would not
increase from 0 percent when trying to increase it on the rotor. The way to
do this is to do it in accessibility settings under voice over. Stuart
mentioned another way two do this. Two finger quadruple tap brings up a
quick menu speech rate can be found here also.
The discussion returned to service providers once more with some people
having to pay some very high prices.
This is how to add music to videos in I movie for those who are curious. Open
I movie app, there are three options on the bottom of the screen they are in
descending order magic movie, storyboard, and movie. If they are not their
double tap start new project. Select movie out of these options. The first
video you come to at the top of the screen will be the most recent one you
have taken double tap this if it is the one you want, then put your finger at
the bottom of the screen where you will find the option called create movie
double tap here you are brought to a new screen. Swipe around the screen
until you find the option titled insert media, here you will have various
options. To insert music, select audio from the list provided. Select
soundtracks or my music and make your choice. Select use music beside the
option you want to use. When finished swipe around the screen until coming to
return to projects list and there you are a video with music you can play or
share it wherever
you want from here. The note taker hopes that people find this to be useful.
Discussion of what iPhone people have currently and how expensive the newest
model of iPhone is was talked about.. The 14 is over 1000 euro currently.
Some people have the SE and 11 and SE 3.
Debate emerged on whether the iPhone without the home button or with the home
button is better. The group was split some preferred with the button and some
preferring having none. the note taker came down on the side without the
home button. Discussion of insurance came up, some people had not insured
their iPhone, and some have done so. This topic was talked about for a small
period of time here.
Someone’s phone previously ended up in the washing machine, thankfully they
had it insured. Discussion of ways of drying the phone was discussed ranging
from wrapping it in toilet paper, putting it in a bag of rice etc.
Discussion of the recent news of a new cargo port in Cork was talked about
for a while at this point. The history of places like the marine college was
also discussed.
To find downloads like NVDA open windows key, search, and search for
downloads. They are in file explorer. NVDA was discussed for a period and was
given praise. Jaws was also discussed. The pros and cons were talked about.
The JAWS special offer that happens once a year was talked about. Everyone
has a different version of JAWS on their devices.
Discussion of how to read pdf’s came up. The iPhone was mentioned to be very
good at doing this by utilising voice dream reader. There was also a recent
big windows update according to Ken. Paul has been using windows 11 for the
last two months. Some members wish for windows xp to return. Some others
preferred windows 7 and or 10.
Paul also discussed his new external keyboard; he has recently purchased some
bumps for it from NCBI. Some members have used them before and explained how
they use them and what keys they put them om. There are different versions of
these bumps some of them are sturdier than others. Some members use their
external keyboards very in frequently only for long e-mails that can take a
long time to type out with the iPhone virtual keyboard.
You can also schedule e-mails on outlook as well as the mail app. The
benefits of scheduling e-mails were discussed for example sending a weekly
e-mail out. The new features of IOS 16 were discussed and whether anyone of
them were worth updating for to obtain.
The Smart hub was discussed for the next part of the meeting. Joanne asked if
the echo show was good at reading information on products, the answer was
mixed. It works quicker than seeing AI.
At this point the participants agreed to end the meeting having exhausted all
technological discussion for the time being. The note taker hopes that you
found his minutes to have been enjoyable to peruse this week.
All the best
Regards
The Note taker.===========================================================
