Lady W is flying high on the Hable portable Braille keyboard. The user holds
the keyboard like a phone with thumbs on the front and fingers activating
the braille keys on the reverse side. Incredibly, she is astounding herself
and everyone else by controlling every aspect of her iPhone while keeping
the phone in her pocket. The Hable keyboard is being promoted in Ireland by
sight & Sound technology who are running a competition for its 30 volunteer
users to see who can do the most with the keyboard. Hopefully Jackie will be
able to digest all that can be done with the keyboard and win the prize.
Although we believe no technology was involved, we have to congratulate Paul
on becoming a grandfather once again! Amazing what can be achieved even
without technology.
This is a major sporting weekend with Shane Lowrie and Rachel Blackmore
flying the flag high for Ireland.
Moving on to technology, Ken wanted help to find out how he, as Admin of the
Zoom session, could send out an invitation to a person who is not already in
his group contact list. Several voices waded in and, led by Stuart, showed
Ken that the Invite button at the bottom of the Participants screen was the
key. In here, Ken found all the choices he would need to send an invitation
by email, text, message, etc.
Paul wondered how to send a text or email message to someone who is not in
his contacts.
Ken demonstrated that he could enter the phone or text number directly into
the "To" field and then fill in the Subject line and from there move to the
body and type his message. Ken found that the number would disappear from
the "To" field if the number was not real or shorter than it should be.
Likewise, the message would fail if the subject line was left blank.
It was suggested that the number be placed in the contacts list under a name
beginning with "Z" or "A" to keep it to the beginning or end of the contact
list so that it could be easily removed later.
Ken raised a question of where to find the connection in the iPad when
using the iPhone as the Hot spot WIFI connection.
Stuart explained that, once connected, the Hot Spot connection could be
found under "Other Network" in the WIFI settings on the iPad.
Paul finds it a nuisance that his iPhone screen is minimised when he goes to
respond to an incoming phone call. Dominique pointed out that he could
change this by going to:
settings >phone> allow phone to access> incoming calls full screen.
This would allow the Voiceover user to manage the whole screen without
showing other apps that confuse the scree.
Dominique is using the Windows app to access Zoom and looked for help with
the list of participants. Martin explained that the keystroke is alt u for
the list of participants.
Another press of alt u collapses the screen again.
Martin is a keen blind tennis player and happened to mention that Stuart is
the no. 1 player in Ireland. Congratulations, Stuart!
Stuart explained that the tennis ball has a ringing rattle that enables the
player to detect the location and travel of the ball.
Chris was reassured that his iPhone battery is in good nick even though it
is showing a maximum, capacity of 82%. Cearbhall checked his battery in a
phone of less than one year usage, where the battery capacity is already
down to 86%. In the ensuing discussion, it appears that Apple are still
responsible for the warranty on the phone and that notifying Apple of a
pending problem extends the insurance warranty to a number of years if the
problem matures after the end of the warranty period. Without warranty
cover, it costs â¬70 to change a battery with which also means that the
speaker has to be changed.

The meeting expressed concern about the dodgy nature of cheap batteries
available in street markets and warned against their usage.
Chris and Dominique reported great results by installing a TP-Link Wireless
Range Extender to their home systems.
Chris reported a satisfactory outcome to his bad experience with a bus
driver who demanded that he keep the harness on his guide dog while on the
bus and other ignorant behaviour on the part of the driver. This involved
some diplomatic enquiries of Bus Eireann who extended apologies to Chris in
view of the bad service he received.
Dominique reminded everyone that Apple was holding a major event from the
6th. to 10th. of June 2022, in which the keynote address will deliver news
of IOS 16 which goes live on that date.
