Hi all,
John and Amanda are looking at possible ways to promote awareness of the
cork Exchange club to encourage more users. There is a core of four regular
attendees who come to the library every week and we would like it to be more
widely used given that the southern counties are not so far away from cork
as Dublin would be.
Amanda proposes a few possibilities. If anyone in the FB-Exchange clubs,
Cork or Dublin, would like to comment or make a suggestion, please do so.
I should mention that I am actively proposing that we use Voicebridge to
allow those who are a long distance from cork to dial in at no more than the
cost of a local call. This evening, Joan Ann Brosnan and Kenneth Walsh
joined with me, here in bray, over Voicebridge and we were impressed at the
excellent quality of the audio. It was better than the audio of a speaker
phone, for example. We also found that there was no echo which can happen
if a number of calls are linked and one is using a speaker phone rather than
a handset. In fact, both Kenneth and I switch over to speaker phone mode and
there was still no echo. We did find that the best sound quality is to be
had from the handset rather than the open speaker.
We are still waiting for Cork city Library to approve dialling out to
Voicebridge as they have kindly provided a phone for receiving calls from a
single person dialling in. If they could approve the use of the library
phone to make a local call to Voicebridge (it is a Cork number, after all!)
then we could have outlying callers join the cork meeting over Voicebridge
while others attend the library in person.

Just having a think about this, would be delighted to help. I've outlined a
few ideas below:
We can schedule monthly social media posts promoting the group. What works
really well if there were actual photos or updates from the group. For
example 'Today at the Exchange Club Cork we had John Smith present the new
accessible features of the iPad. if you would like to join us for the next
group please contact us on XYZ etc' Would there be a representative there
who might be able to supply little updates like this?
Also on 23 February it is 'Digital Learning Day' so it would be worthwhile
sending a press release that week to local radio stations to promote the
Exchange Clubs (local Cork and Dublin press) what we'd need there is a
representative either yourself, Cearbhall or someone from VICS available to
chat about the Exchange Club on the air?
We might also investigate a grant for budget to help promote the group via
social media advertising specifically targeted to the Cork areas. We could
give the CESCA Cork grant a bash again or if any other local grants are
available.
As discussed before we are hoping to launch a blog this quarter and would
like to build up some posts to add in. Would anyone in the Cork Exchange
Club (or Dublin) like to contribute a blog post about what assistive
technology they find particularly beneficial, and how the Exchange Club has
helped them. We can share this on our blog when launched and potentially in
the Visionaries magazine?
I'll have a think about other ways to get the word out.

The Cork Exchange Clubbers are thinking of ways to promote their service in
the general Munster region and one suggestion was their own Face Book Page.
Whilst the Cork club is a 'joint venture' with VICS I am wondering how we
might integrate the promotion of this service into our existing social media
platforms rather than the creation of a separate entity etc. If you had a
moment perhaps we could have a word about this.
