Sightless Cinema is bringing In the Dark on national tour, following sell-out
runs at Rua Red, Tallaght and Draíocht in 2022. The show brings to life
dramatic turning points in the lives of five people who are blind or visually
impaired. It’s an immersive surround sound experience where the audience can
wear blindfolds, and all the sound effects and music are performed live.
Performed by a cast of twelve people with sight loss, these are stories of
adversity, adventure and determination.
A man in his thirties hopes to regain his sight in a transplant operation,
another loses his in a matter of weeks, while one young girl dreams of riding a
bicycle again after her brain operation, and a young man must go to a cliff
edge in Wales to find his limits.
Since 2015 Sightless Cinema has presented eight original programmes of surround
sound plays at venues including Lighthouse Cinema and IMC Cinemas. In November
the company toured Blind Panic to Solstice and Dunamaise Arts Centres and The
Civic Theatre with support from The Arts Council. They also produced online
comedies 'The Covid Tapes' and 'Ballymuck Exchange - a telephone comedy during
the pandemic'. Sightless Cinema is delighted to be supported by RETHINK IRELAND
in 2024 in partnership with the Department of Children, Equality, Disability,
Integration and Youth under their Disability Participation and Awareness Fund,
allowing the company to continue to develop across three counties.
