Subject: [IRELANDVIPNEWS] Navilens trial on some Irish Rail Carriages
Hi all,
Irish Rail informed Voice of Vision Impairment yesterday that they are
beginning trials of Navilens on several carraiges on the Maynooth and Drogheda
commuter lines.
As you'll know from Sandy's updates, Navilens works from an app that is free on
the Apple app store. For the purposes of this trial, when you are in one of the
carriages concerned, you take out your iPhone and open the app. Then you trun
the phone so that it can look for the Navilens tags that Irish Rail has
installed on the carriages. When the iPhone has found the tags, it will read
you information that is available to everyone else.
We’re not sure yet what information this includes, but hopefully it will
include the carriage number, and location information such as next stop and
estimated time before arrival (for example, “Next stop, Hazelhatch, 3 minutes’.
Apologies for short notice, but Irish Rail can only give the times per carriage
the day before operation, and each day may see different carriages operating on
different trains.
So, if you are in the Dublin area today and you are in a position to tett Irish
Rail’s Navilens experiment, the following information may be of interest, and
we would be very interested in how you get on so we can feed it back at our
Irish Rail meetings. Of course, you can feedback to this list, or to
info@xxxxxx, and a reminder that VVI is always delighted to have new members.
