Hi everyone in the cork and Dublin clubs,
I have not heard from anyone in relation to this topic so I expect we will
have a lively debate tomorrow!
I received the message below from Stuart Lawlor, formerly of NCBI and now in
Sight & Sound. He makes a very interesting offer that I think we should
discuss and see what everyone thinks about it.
Stuart says:
I’m delighted to hear you are considering Zoom for the Exchange group, mainly
because it is a really great service, and they have made huge efforts to
build accessibility in from the start.
The very first thing you, or the Exchange group need to do, as meeting
organisers, is to create a Zoom account. There is a little confusion in the
information you received from Bert, so let me explain.
If your meeting is only for two people, then, the meeting can last
indefinitely and there is no charge for using the service. If your meeting
has more than two people however, free accounts are limited to a max meeting
length of 40 minutes. In NCBI we used a paid account, so it gave us up to 100
members in a room, with unlimited meeting times. We do the very same here at
Sight and Sound, and, indeed, I’d be very happy to collaborate with your
group to allow you access our paid for account for your meetings, thus
enabling you to hold them free of charge. In return, I’d simply ask that
Sight and Sound could be acknowledged occasionally in meetings.
Just to give you a sense of the pricing structure, a paid for account costs
about €150 per year, and, as I said above, this allows you to host meetings
for up to 100 people with no time limits. It also, by the way, includes the
ability to record your meetings and even has live captioning, if you wanted
to use that.
I’d be more than happy to help you get everything set up if you wish to go
ahead.
Thanks, and look forward to hearing from you.
Stuart
Me again:
I have also been trying out an app called “join.me” When my son set this up
it worked very well. However, The icons just say “Button” and so would have
to be labelled – which is easy to do and worth it if the app looks like what
we need for our group discussions.
Join.me is free for up to 10 users in one meeting.
All the best,
Cearbhall
