I was asked during the last Dublin Tech Club to put together a small guide on
how to use apple's keychain feature on the iPhone. I will be discussing the
keychain in the context of a voice over user on an i phone.
To start off what is the apple key chain? The keychain is apple's inbuilt
password manager. It stores all your passwords in a single place so that you
can locate them easily if needed. It can be used to put passwords automatically
into website's so that you do not have to remember a million different
passwords, it can also create a password for you if you are signing up to a
service that requires a password for the first time as well.
To locate the apple keychain you need to
1. open your settings app,
2. scroll down until you hear voice over say "passwords".
3. Double tap here.
4. Once you do this, depending on how you have it set up, you will be required
to enter your passcode you use to unlock your phone. Use Face ID, or Touch ID
if your phone supports it. If you do not have any of these features enabled you
will not be asked for it.
Once you open passwords, you are faced with a screen with a few options: Using
Voiceover, swipe right to hear them all. In order.
These are: "add", "edit" and "password options".
Another option becomes available once you put in your first few passwords
called "security recommendations".
The add button allows you the ability to add new passwords to the keychain.
When you double tap it you are brought to a screen with a number of edit
fields.
They are in the following order:
*. Website where you type the website that the password corresponds to. Make
sure you put the entire website in for example https://www.applevis.com/
*. User name: this is where you put the user name that you are using on the app
or website. For example your email address.
*. Password: this is where you put the password you will be using.
*. Notes: this is a field where you can put in anything you want. For example,
where this could be useful: say, you have multiple netflix accounts, you could
add a note in both of them saying which one of them is your personal account
or which one is your family account.
Once you are finished here, select the "done" button at the top right of the
screen to save your password. It now appears on the main password screen under
the title of the website you entered. If you discover, however, that you made a
mistake or wish to delete it from the keychain, you can do this easily. To
delete a password find the one you want gone, then swipe one finger down until
you hear "delete" then double tap it.
To edit a password, you need to double-tap it, which will bring you into a
screen with all its information: website, user name and password. Find the
password's "back" button and swipe right until you hear "edit"/ Double tap
this. You can now edit the information. Select "done" to save the changes.
The password options mentioned earlier gives you the ability to enable a
setting called "autofill". This feature will, most of the time, allow you the
option to automatically put in your passwords on apps or websites where you
have assigned them. To know if this feature is working correctly, go to a
website or app that you have created a password for, double-tap the password
box. If you get a prompt at the bottom of the screen asking you if you want the
password to be put in instead of the keyboard, it has worked! Select "yes" for
the password to be put in. Once you do this, you will be asked for your
passcode once more or face ID or touch ID if enabled on your device.
The security recommendation section provides you information such as a warning
when your passwords are weak or need to be changed because they have leaked in
a security breach.
Apple will also offer to create a password for you on an app or website. When
this happens you are told that "apple has created a strong password for you do
you want to use it?" If you agree, it will be saved in your keychain.
I hope everyone found this guide on how the iphone keychain works to be
beneficial, there are a few other features that you can discover in the
keychain but this was getting quite long at this point.
Regards
Stuart
