Hi folks,
the question of Password Managers, VPNs, and privacy came up at a recent tech club. I am forwarding the latest Duck Duck Go weekly privacy newsletter, in case it is of interest.
I would also recommend theStartPage search engine:
www.startpage.com
Their Think Privacy blog is worth a read.

  • Google’s Antitrust Trial to Set ‘Future of the Internet,' DOJ Says [wsj.com]
"Google paid huge sums to cement its dominance in internet search, shut out competitors and stifle innovation, the Justice Department alleged Tuesday in kicking off the biggest antitrust trial in more than two decades," report Miles Kruppa and Jan Wolfe.
  • It’s Official: Cars Are the Worst Product Category We Have Ever Reviewed for Privacy [foundation.mozilla.org]
"Modern cars are a privacy nightmare." Mozilla reviewed 25 car brands, all of which fell well below their privacy standards, earning their "Privacy Not Included" warning label. So why are modern cars — or "computers on wheels" — so bad at privacy? According to Mozilla:
  • They collect too much personal data: "How you interact with your car, the connected services you use in your car, the car’s app (which provides a gateway to information on your phone), and can gather even more information about you from third party sources like Sirius XM or Google Maps."
  • Most (84%) share your data and many (76%) say they can sell your personal data.
  • Most (92%) give drivers little to no control over their personal data.
  • They couldn’t confirm whether any of them meet Mozilla's Minimum Security Standards.
  • Facebook Trains Its AI on Your Data. Opting Out May Be Futile [wired.com]
Do you use Facebook? "As Meta, the company behind Facebook, continues to develop its generative artificial intelligence tools, you can now request the removal of some of the personal data the company uses to train its AI model." Do this by navigating to the "Generative AI Data Subject Rights at Facebook" form in its help center.

"There are a ton of caveats, though," warns Reece Rogers — "the form does not pertain to the gobs of personal information Meta has already collected from you on its platforms; it only applies to outside data the company may bring in to beef up its generative AI."

And finally…
