Hi,
I am hoping to get people to read and, hopefully, share this post. i think
it describes the joys and possibilities of using NaviLens in supermarkets for
anyone who is print disabled! If you like it, please do share whereever you
think it might resonate, always remembering, accessible signage is something
that many different people can benefit from.
Hallo there,
Here is a link to a shortish conversation between two VIPs about travelling. It
focuses upon the last few yards/metres being the most problematical or
frightening. This conversation struck a note with me, because it can be so easy
to stay at home, especially with all the online options available to us now.
Yesterday, and the day before, I spend long hours with Jose (Video creator and
director of NaviLens, and Oran, who we all know here! They came over from Spain
to make a temporary installation of my local Tesco, with NaviLens codes! So, I
went along with Zyon, to try them out. Not only were there the codes on the
various products to be found in the Aisles, but also the wayfinding coes, put
in place by Jose and Oran. These last included codes indicating what was in the
aisles, the number of the aisles, and "Decision point" codes, on the floor,
placed at the intersections of the main aisle and the aisles going off from it.
So, Zyon and I would be walking along the main Aisle, reaching "decision
points" these points would offer me choices, such as "Bakery" "emergency exit"
"cereals" "Check out" "Laundry" etc, to name but a few! I could then select my
choice and get direction, via the other "Decision points" as to my direction of
travel. When I arrived at the turn off for my aisle, it would tell me "turn
left here for cereals" and, voila, I was down the aisle with all the Kellogg's
products, announcing themselves on my phone.
We then played with identifying and selecting and eventually, picking up a
predetermined product!! It was great fun! It left me with a great sense of
achievement and the staff and public seemed equally amazed at what can be done
with these codes. Zyon had the time of his life with all the adoration, but,
by the end of the day, he had "shopped till he dropped!"
I almost forgot, Jose and Oran being consummate professionals, had also
NaviLensed the bus stop, outside the front door of the shop (which I never knew
existed!) and the Entrance of the shop. Z and myself found the bus stop no
problems! Turned and immediately found the front door. Both of these codes were
in "Magnet mode" which means that when you phone sees them, it instantly jumps
you into guidance sounds and haptics and you get taken by the phone to the pole
or door! Magic!! Inside the front door was a code, a normal QR Code, put there
by Tesco with special offer info. Jose put a NaviLens Accessible QR Code frame
around this and I could find it, upon approaching the door and read all the
info, and have it there on my phone for when I was shopping!
I could go up the stairs, down the stairs, all with the codes, use the lift and
avail of the cafe, on the first floor and find and use the Accessible toilet,
which is up by the cafe. i have seen the face of accessible shopping and it is
wonderful!
Now, you might be saying to yourself "why would I bother? It is much easier to
shop online, at home?" And i am delighted that we do have this option, but
nothing beats the feeling of inclusivity, know where you are, what is around
you noticing products you never new existed! Choosing which aisle to go down.
Not necessarily on your own or with a dog, but also with a
friend/partner/assistant, because you will be so much more part of the
experience and have your own choices to make. I didn't know there were
different flavours of Pingles, for example, i do now!!! I found and picked up
the Paprika ones!!
These have been two very long hard-working days , but, wow! What a lovely
experience!!
So, this happened because NaviLens offered to make a video and i approached my
favourite supermarket. It was only a trial, it is now dismantled, but, i think
we learned a lot about code placement, how it can work and the best way to plan
out a shop etc.
Sandy and Z, who is now about 3 inches shorter having worn out his feet with
all that "Take 2!" from the tireless Jose.
