Hi Ita.
Guide is an uncomplicated, menu based program Allowing interaction through
speech to a computer For basic tasks such as emailing, documents etc. The
fact that is a simple, menu-based program means that it is no help
whatsoever when trying to progress to other speech synthesizers for the
vision impaired.
JAWS, and its very welcome free equivalent NVDA, as well as other similar
program such as Window Eye, allow users to interact in a far more
sophisticated way with the computer.
I think that most of us, looking back, would agree that there is something
of a steep learning curve involved in mastering either JAWS or NVDA for the
first time. But we all get to our own varying levels of competence in the
end.
So, it is horses for courses, whatever one require's one's computer to do.
I suspect that, if you are using your computer for more than the above basic
functions, that you will want to scale up at some point in the future. Just
my opinion, others may disagree!

Hi PaulI agree that the specs I took from the internet looks to be less than
minimum and that you should go for the recommended RAM of 4GB and hard drive
of 500GB. That may mean buying a new or second hand PC. Also do consider
that when upgrading with your existing PC, the new drivers may not be
available for your current hardware such as your video card and sound
speakers etc. I had experienced nightmares with drivers even when the
hardware is supposed to be supported by Microsoft.Best of luck John

Just a note about the PC specs for windows 10. I do not feel that 1 GB of
ram is anywhere near sufficient to run this operating system. I deal with
this kind of issue almost daily and people blame all sorts of other things
on why their new laptop/PC is running so slowly. Usually when I check their
spec ram is just bare minimum and the processor is usually a low end chip
such as a Celeron or something similar. Also the clock speed would be best
at 3GB and above. So I would suggest the following:
*. Intel processor I5 at least, (64 bit).
*. Minimum of 4GB ram or higher.
*. Clock speed, 3GB or higher.
*. Hard disk, 500gb or higher.
This is just my own personal opinion on this of course.

Hi PaulI did a quick google search and upgrading to windows looks doable but
tricky. I had a PC 3 years old running windows 8.1 and this was upgraded
automatically to windows 10. You too will need to upgrade to windows 7 first
and then to windows 10.Obviously check that the specs of the PC are
acceptable - that is you have the ram, at least 1 GB, sufficient memory
drive (32 GB) and a relatively fast motherboard. Also you need a usb to
create a bootable drive on that usb. The windows 7 can only be downloaded
from third party websites as Microsoft is no longer support windows 7.
Without going into details at this point you install the windows 7 files.
Next you download the media tools from Microsoft and use that to upgrade to
Windows 10.Note that your other softwares like outlook express and Microsoft
Word may not be supported with Windows 10. I need to check that out. I was
able to use my Microsoft Office 2007 when I upgraded to windows 10.Easier
solution but you pay for it could be t o buy a new or second hand ( say a
3 or 4 year old) one already running windows 8.1 and to transfer the old
data to that. Upgrading to windows 10 would be automatic.
You are aware that time is running out for that free upgrade to windows 10 (
