Subject: [fb-exchange] Intro to Playful Programming with the Micro:bit and
E-textiles! Free online workshop
Join researcher, educator and artist Dr Emilie Giles along with programmer and
technology expert Declan Meenagh for this short workshop to learn how to
program the BBC micro:bit. The micro:bit is a small circuit board often used to
teach people how to start getting creative with technology! We will use a
screen reader (NVDA) in assisting us with this, and start to work with the
circuit board using elements like light, sound and vibration in order to get an
output from it. We will also explore making an e-textile sensor as well. If you
have an up-to-date version of JAWS, this workshop may work for you but it has
been tested in detail with NVDA..
No previous programming experience is needed – we’ll be working with a
language called ‘Python’ but at an introductory level. All materials and
the electronics are provided and will be posted out; you just need to have a
laptop or desktop with NVDA installed onto it, or an iPad. You just need a
windows computer with Chrome or Edge browsers. This workshop may work with an
iPhone or iPad app as well but this feature requires sited assistance for one
step and the app may not work as well.
All kit provided in the workshop is yours to keep afterwards so that you can
carry on exploring the possibilities!
