Lazarillo is a free navigation app designed for people with sight loss. Its
name comes from a Spanish book called Lazarillo de Tormes about a boy who
becomes a guide for a blind man. In Spanish countries Lazarillo is also a
term that is used for guide dogs. The app is available on iOS and Android
and is fully accessible with the VoiceOver and TalkBack screen readers.
Using audio messages, Lazarillo will tell you about nearby places, the
street you are walking on, street intersections on your way and more. Like a
radio, Lazarillo will announce the places around you while you move. The
goal is to help you reach your destination in a simple way, receiving
Lazarillo indications by voice and notifications of nearby places,
institutions, shops, etc., allowing communication between the user and the
city.
The GPS resource is used even if the App is in the background. This allows
you to keep using the app without active usage of the screen, so you can
still use Lazarillo even when your phone is in your pocket or when using
other apps.
The app contains the following features:
* Exploration: Provides your actual position, nearby places, and
street intersections while you are walking on the street, in a bus or by
car.
* Category searches: Allows you to find nearby places from a specific
category such as restaurants, health centres, shops, entertainment, etc.
* Specific searches: Allows you to find a route to any place using
voice or keyboard.
* Save favourites: In order to quickly access your favourite spots in
the city, you can select "save" so they become immediately available.
* Customize: You can modify the voice that will pilot you through the
city.
* Routing or guiding from one point to another: By walking, car, bus
or train, you will get from one point to another by the guidance service.
Following the place you want to reach, an alarm will announce if you are
getting closer to the spot. This feature also works if the scan mode is
paused.
