Dear Member,
This is intended to bring you up to date on developments at the League since
the General Meeting in May.
Decision to abolish the provision of grants in the future:
Following on from the High Court order transferring the Union assets to the
Trust, the Board has decided to abolish the system of grants which was part
of the former Trade Union financial benefits system. Accordingly, grants
will cease at the end of January 2020 and no new applications will be
accepted after the 31st of January of that year. The only exception is the
Rose Farrelly Education fund which is independent of the League.
Update on merger with Fighting Blindness:
The legal process for merging with Fighting Blindness has for some time been
in the hands of the Solicitors. In August the League was asked to fill in a
very large Due Diligence questionnaire and to provide a great deal of
related documentation and this was completed by mid-September. More
recently, there have been more Due Diligence requests and we are now
struggling with these. It is impossible to say when the agreement will be
finalised but I think it is safe to say not before the end of the year.

Meantime, our Thursday Coffee Mornings continue to flourish and new people
are more than welcome to join in. However, Wednesday evening swimming at
Belvedere College has had to be put on hold until late January due to
renovations at the pool.
Board news:
At the AGM in May, Declan Meenagh and James Grant stepped down from the
Board having completed five years' service. We would like to express our
thanks to both for all their hard work. Kevin Cave returned to the Board
after a few years absence and Betty O'Leary came back after just one. Betty
stepped forward to provide much-needed help to Michael who has been
overburdened with work for some time. These were joined by newcomers John
O'Connor and Tony Scanlon bringing our Trustees back to a reasonable number.

Office opening hours:
Caroline's hours of work are afternoons 2 to 5 Tuesday to Thursday. She is
also in the Office on Thursday mornings from 10 to 1. A stock of Christmas
cards is still available in the Office and these will as usual be available
for sale during the festive season.
