Hi all,
Many thanks for your suggestions for looking for a file on my PC. I tried
the various methods discussed, but did not find it! Perhaps I deleted it,
but have no memory of doing so.
Burt frequently referred to a program he called "Search Everything." I
assume this is the same program mentioned by john.
I downloaded it and found it easy to use. However I have two questions.
1: am I correct in thinking the characters typed in the search box, must be
a part of the file name; rather than a part of the document?
2: how do you clear results from previous searches? For example, when you
open the program your place in the search field which is empty . once you do
a search a load of results appear below the search field. When you next open
the program, Those results are still there. Is there a way of deleting them?
many thanks - Eamonn

Paul and John,
Thanks, John, I had not know about "Everything". I installed it and I am
rea;;u impressed with the ease with which it reveals all the appropriate
files that have the keywords in the file name.
This thread began with the need to identify the files that contained a given
keyword even though that keyword was not in the file name!
I cannot find any way that the Everything tool does that.
I am still convinced that the file explorer method is more suitable for the
original requirement.
All the best,
Cearbhall

Hi Cearbhall
I am not a great fan of the Windows 10 file explorer searching for a file
that you know you have put away and have forgotten where or how it was
labelled. I came across a nice software I use for searching that is small
and free and very easy to use. Called Everything you simply open it, type in
the key word or words and then tab to the search results. On opening it
defaults to the swarch bar and the key words are not case sensitive, However
it is used for file names only on your drive. Here is a llnk to the
installer.
Downloads - voidtools <https://www.voidtools.com/downloads/>.
Hope you find it usefull

Eamonn,
I have been struggling with this myself and your query prompted me to

As a result, I found out that we need to focus on the nearest folder

To start the search, I press control+E to open the search textbox. I
Type the keyword or keywords here. It is important to note that this
search is case sensitive so the capitals must be there if they are
part of the keywords.
Press Enter to launch the search and wait while the rising pips
indicate that a search is in progress.
Any files found should now be under the active cursor on the screen
and be spoken by the screen reader.
By the way, Control E launches the same search tool that the sighted
person launches when they click on the magnifying glass. So, the
search results should look the same as those that the sighted user sees.
I tried these steps with the "Be My eyes" assistant watching and it
went well.
I hope this works for you, too.
By the way, pressing the Windows key opens a different search engine
that will only give confusing results for the screen reader.
Basically, this search finds items on the web and not immediately on

Subject: [fb-exchange] Looking For a file on my PC
Hi gang,
I am trying to find a file on my PC; the name of which I cannot remember.
When I hit the windows key and type a phrase from the text file, web
choices appear, but nothing relating to what's on my PC.
When doing a search in Windows 10, is there a way of limiting the
results to what's on your PC; as opposed to matches from the web?
I recall Windows 7 having a very comprehensive search feature, which
seems to be lacking in Windows 10. Or perhaps it's my understanding
that slacking!
Any help will be much appreciated.
A very happy Easter -
