The meeting opened in chaos at the news of Poor Paul's being struck down with
painful Sciatica. In vain a substitute note-taker was sought but various
valid reasons were successful in putting off the painful duty.
Bob has a new Android phone running Android Jelly Bean. This is the codename
given to the tenth version of the Android mobile operating system. He bought
the phone direct from Taiwan. It is very small and full of useful functions
including infra red which Bob uses to run sound blaster Hi-Fi and sound
recognition which intrigued Declan who is looking forward to trying it out.
bob is impressed with the high standard of Chinese mobile technology which is
available at a more reasonable price than that of other countries. He mentioned
that GPS on Jelly Bean is being used by most phones around the world. The four
national operators of GPS are now attempting to cooperate and work together to
produce a more stable word-wide system.
Mary has bought a set of Bang & Olufsen's airbuds. They cost €30 (about
one-tenth of the value of the current model). The sound quality is excellent
and Mary finds them very comfortable to wear. Declan pointed out that many
products have a pre-release version of the products which are made available at
a low cost to attract interest in buying the full product. He was sure that
Mary's purchase was in this category and therefore a fully developed product
rather than a copy. Mary is expecting the battery to last for a full 16 hours
and will report back.
Tom is struggling to get a decent speed out of his Virgin Media internet
service. Bert recommended that he plug his laptop directly into the modem to
see what speed is coming into the house. Once that connection is found to be
adequate the next step would be to try the WIFI connection in various rooms to
find out if there are any issues such as copper pipes thick walls etc. that
could be blocking the WIFI signal. If all else fails then it might be advisable
to buy a “Nest System†which places WIFI outlets in several rooms around
the house. Bert recommended using a speed test app on the phone to test the
quality of the WIFI stream. Declan found the following link
broadbandspeedtest.ie to be very accessible. Vera is also using virgin Media
and is getting a speed of 500 mps in her house.
Mary wondered if a Bluetooth headset could be used in conjunction with a USB
connected headset for her choral work. Various views were aired and the
conclusion was that the USB would probably dominate the Bluetooth connection
and make a merged usage impossible.
Arising from a recent discussion at the Saturday FB-Exchange meeting Martin
wanted to understand the meaning of "layered keys". Bert explained that this
concept emerged after JAWS had begun to develop too many keystrokes for users
to remember which key did what and so they devised the concept of "Layered
keys" to permit key strokes to be collected into bundles to be used in
different contexts. The JAWS way of invoking Layered Keys is by means of
Insert + space bar. A brief article on this topic was sent to FB-Exchange
discussion list earlier today.
Annette had a question about BorrowBox. Mary showed her how to use the search
tool to find books by a particular author. Cearbhall showed that the "Details"
and the "More" buttons at the top of the "Now Playing" page will show any
remaining titles in the BorrowBox library that are written by the same author
and those that are read by the actor who has recorded the current reading.
Where the actor has read books by authors other than the current writer, the
additional titles will also be shown in this list.
