Geraldine And Pat McCarthy touched on the importance of having Location
Services turned on when asking Siri for position details. Geraldine was
having difficulties checking in to FACEBOOK with Voiceover staying silent.
Ken suggested a work around of going out of Check In and then going back in
again which usually solves the problem.
Pat McCarthy spoke about the usefulness of the Low Power Battery Mode
Setting in more recent IOS releases if one knows that it will be a long time
before the next recharge and where an extended period of battery life is
required on the iPhone. He also recommended the split tap gesture as a
useful alternative when deleting or correcting text in messages, emails etc.
Pat Walsh had some questions about operating Powerpoint (he is usingNVDA),
when presenting a slide show; specifically about being able to follow his
own notes on his slides, which would, in turn, not appear on the overhead
projector presentation. Cearbhall recommended the F6 toggle key which
toggles between the two overhead panes (header and body) and the notes pane.
Ken is also having problems reading some study notes with Powerpoint.
Cearbhall suggested that Ken emails him the notes directly and he will try
to help. Cearbhall has commenced work on a Powerpoint tutorial which is
eagerly anticipated in due course. He observed that, in his experience,
NVDA provides a more satisfactory approach than JAWS when reading
Powerpoint and other screens.
This led to a general discussion about NVDA and its pros and cons. Paul is
currently in the process of moving over gradually to NVDA from JAWS. He
pointed out that NVDA is a community-based project, relying on donations
rather than charging and setting out to provide a service to vision impaired
people whether they can afford it or not; and consequently deserving of
support. He admitted that it was a challenge getting to grips with some of
the differences in approach between NVDA and JAWS.
Cearbhall is an enthusiastic advocate for NVDA and gave a brief outline of
its approach to interrogating what it is reading. NVDA is object oriented
whereas JAWS is linear. NVDA provides its own detailed tutorials and there
are also spoken tutorials available from:

Pat Walsh had an issue with photos in his OUT Box not sending but a
difficulty with a password did not allow us to fully solve the problem.
This all too familiar password problem led to a PAT McCarthy suggestion
about using apps such as Pages to password-protect all ones passwords in
one file with a password one will not forget. Another suggestion discussed
was to braille all ones passwords, and free password protection apps were
also mentioned.
The Simple Radio and Receiver apps were mentioned positively. . It was
noted that it is now possible to use the BBC iPlayer In Ireland.
Pat McCarthy told us about the three month trial offer from Apple Music. He
recommended giving oneself a reminder dated a couple of days before the
expiry date since there is an automatic charge if one does not cancel by the
expiry of the trial period. He found Apple Music quite accessible.
