My top five apps I use as a blind person.

technology has played a pivotal role in enhancing my independence, confidence, and mobility. Here are my top five daily go-to apps that have empowered me to lead a fulfilling life independently.
**1. Be My Eyes:** Be My Eyes is a remarkable app that connects blind or visually impaired people like me, with sighted volunteers. Its versatility is what makes it invaluable in my daily life. Whether I’ve dropped something on the floor, need to read specific instructions on food packaging, or navigate an unfamiliar hotel room, Be My Eyes has my back. What’s even more exciting is that I’ve had the privilege of beta testing a groundbreaking feature. Using artificial intelligence, I can take a photo of my surroundings, and the app provides a detailed description. I can ask follow-up questions about any part of the photo, making this a revolutionary tool.
**2. Seeing AI:** Seeing AI is another indispensable app in my toolkit. It boasts multiple features that I use regularly. The short text feature allows me to point my camera at text, and it reads it aloud. This is incredibly helpful for deciphering labels on canned goods. The document feature lets me take a picture of my mail, and it reads it back to me. However, what I find particularly useful is the light detection feature. As a blind person, I can’t discern whether lights are on or off. Seeing AI solves this by emitting a high-pitched tone for lights being on and a low tone for darkness. It’s a simple yet brilliant aid.
**3. Google Maps:** Navigating my environment independently is a top priority, and Google Maps is my trusted companion. When I’m in an unfamiliar area or faced with a new route, it provides step-by-step directions that empower me to travel with confidence. The audible guidance ensures I stay on the right path and reach my destination safely.
**4. Amazon:** Amazon is a mixed bag for me, but I mostly view it as a blessing. The app’s user-friendly and accessible design make it easier for me to shop for a wide range of products without the hassle of navigating physical stores. Whether I’m buying everyday items or searching for the perfect birthday or Christmas gift, I can browse descriptions, read reviews, and make informed decisions. However, I must admit that the “one-click buy” button can be a temptation, so I use it cautiously!
**5. Tesco:** Online grocery shopping has been a game-changer for me, and Tesco’s app stands out for its accessibility and user-friendliness. I can explore great offers, access my favorite products, and review nutritional information and cooking instructions with ease. This level of detail empowers me to make healthier food choices confidently.
These five apps have truly transformed my daily life, granting me the independence and freedom to make choices, explore the world, and lead a fulfilling life. I’d love to hear about the apps that empower you in your daily life as well!
