I should really have researched this a bit before answering earlier!
Orientation is managed from the control panel, not from the rotor!
I gather that if you locked the device in portrait mode but have it lying in
landscape mode, the automatic orientation will change to match the way your
device is lying at the time that you unlock it. Does that make sense?
The screen orientation lock is the issue. To change the orientation, it is
advised that you simply rotate the device.

Screen Portrait Orientation mode displays content in landscape
(horizontal) or portrait (vertical) and isn't available for all apps. Simply
turn the device to change the view.
The steps below apply to the following models:
iPhone X / XS / XS Max / XR
iPhone 8 / 8 Plus

iPhone SE
iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus
iPhone 5 / 5c / 5s
iPhone 4 / 4s
1. Access the Control Centre by touching the bottom of any screen then
dragging upward. (We use three finer slide up from the top of the screen!)
Note For the iPhone X, XS / XS Max and XR swipe downward from the
upper-right corner of the Home or Lock screen to access Control Centre.
2. Tap the Portrait Orientation icon to lock or unlock screen portrait
orientation.
Note When the icon is highlighted in white, the screen is locked into
portrait orientation mode.
Note The Control Centre screen may vary slightly depending on device model.

Thanks Cearbhall for that useful info that I didn't know about, but I can't
find orientation on the rotor. What do I look for? There's only "EDIT,
SPEAKING RATE, WORDS, CHARACTERS & CONTAINERS".

Dominique,
Do you have orientation on the rotor? This behaviour looks as though the
rotor has orientation in focus when you unlock the phone and it becomes
active or is changed to landscape once the lock is opened and finds itself
in landscape mode.

Hello all!
I'm just wondering has anyone else experienced or noticed this too?
"When I turn on my phone after it being off, VoiceOver says "Portrait".
I've "Lock Rotation" "ON", but if it's off, it changes to "Landscape", and
this also is announced too after it's locked and then unlocked!
This has only been happening since the update before yesterday's one!
I "Reset all Settings" but it's still the same!
I've e-mailed Apple outlining this before now, and I'm just wondering should
I inform them of it again, so that's why I want to know have other's
experienced it too?
