You raise an interesting question!
There is a way to do so through Notification Preview try this link:

Here is a brief summary of the action:
1. Open your WhatsApp app.
2. Navigate to Settings.
3. Locate Notifications and turn on Show Notifications and Show Preview by
scrolling down.
4. Now exit the app. You may now access the WhatsApp messages by swiping down
the notification panel.
