That's strange as I thought that that was one of the defaults there.
You could go to settings, rotor and take a look at the options there and
if you find 'letters' just select it and it will be added.
I'll take a look at my own iPhone shortly and iff there is anything to
add I will get back.

I bought a vodafone voucher credit for to top up in morning , I got a sighted
person to read the number out which I emailed myself but on the iphone 8 I
could swipe down for to read the numbers one at a time but cant figure out why
