Declan announced that he got a new webcam and is testing it today.
Looking good Declan! He also informed us that he will soon have access to
an iPad therefore he will be experimenting with IOS soon.
Declan also announced that Paul Griffith apologized as he will not be in
attendance today.
Cearbhaill was getting ââ¬ÅActive Speaker Avatarââ¬Å by his voiceover
on his
iPhone. He had to turn voice over off during meeting. While doing this he
realised that a two-finger double tap would mute voice over.
Gerry was asking how to back up his device. Declan suggested Google Drive
with 15GB of free storage. Photos can also be stored on Google Photos, but
it fills up fast and then one has to pay for additional storage.
Mary said that while she was muted, she pressed the space bar to talk but
Jaws was trying to speak the key while she was holding the space bar down.
Cearbhaill and Albert suggested to press ââ¬ÅInsert + spaceâ⬠and wait
to
hear a cling and then press ââ¬Åsâ⬠to stop Jaws speaking your keys.
Eamonn reminded us of the function ââ¬Åinsert + space + jâ⬠to enter
command search.
Joan was asking if anybody has bought a windows laptop recently. What
specifics should one look for? It was suggested to go for something with at
least 4GB of RAM (8GB is standard nowadays) and ideally you should have
512GB hard drive. Install the Operating system on the standard drive
and use the hard drive for programmes. For photos/videos it is
recommended to store on external drives or SD cards.
John has been having difficulties with getting Siri to call a number with
a lot of ââ¬Å4â⬠s in it. It was suggested to either call them out as
ââ¬Ådouble 4 double 4 double 4â⬠or store the number on his contacts so
that he can then just tell Siri to call the recipient.
Cearbhaill has had a windows update done over the night and this morning
there seems to be some issues with outlook. He will be restarting the
computer later to see if the issue solves itself.
Albert said he will put a windows 10 link for accessibility by Joseph on
the exchange list.
Gerry raised the question of the difference between NVDA and Jaws?
Cearbhaill said that NVDA is object oriented and that is why it is lighter
while Jaws is a bit clunkier as it is not object oriented but by no means
less efficient.
Jackie wanted to know where the ââ¬ÅWindowsâ⬠key is located. Declan
explained that it is not always located in the same place, but it usually
is the second key to the left of the spacebar.
Windows Key with some letters is a good shortcut for bringing up specific
menus like:
Windows + X brings up a very useful menu with control panel, network, apps
and features, power, taskbar etc.
Window E ââ¬â file explorer
Window M ââ¬â minimizes everything
Window R ââ¬â brings up run
On windows 10 if you want to stop an app that is starting, press ââ¬Åctrl +
shiftâ⬠and ââ¬Åescapeâ⬠to bring up Task Manager. Tab to
ââ¬ÅStart
upâ⬠to get
all the apps that could start automatically. ââ¬ÅShift + f10â⬠to
enable
or disable a particular app from automatically starting. Warning Alert!
Be careful not to click on any useful programmes while doing this.
Eamonn asked how to make a particular browser your default browser.
Albert said to go to ââ¬ÅStart menuâ⬠and type ââ¬Ådefaultâ⬠.
Tab to
ââ¬ÅDefault appsâ⬠. You will find all your default programmes there
and can
change them to your preferences.
Cearbhaill suggested Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is very accessible with
screen readers.
Microsoft Edge is becoming a bit more accessible with screen readers
nowadays. Declan has found it quite good for reading pdf files.
Jackie was told by a friend that her Skype account has been hacked. She
reported herself as spam. She had signed up with her old eircom address so
now she canââ¬â¢t get into her account to cancel it. Declan suggested to
get
in touch with Microsoft. Jackie said that sheââ¬â¢s already filled in a
form, but she canââ¬â¢t remember who her contacts where on it. She sent it
in with all the info she could gather anyway.
A conversation took place on the accessibility of Skype. Most agree that
it used to be more accessible but since Microsoft took over this was not so
anymore.
Jackie talked about the rumble tag and how comfortable she found it. For
more info go to rumbletag.co.uk. Cost was 23GPB with free delivery.
John said that he is having difficulty accessing the global menu on
android. Drawing the letter ââ¬Ålâ⬠hasnââ¬â¢t been working
successfully
lately.
Declan suggested to make sure to do a firm turn right and to go over the
gestures again perhaps there is something that works better.
Gerry said that before he started using outlook, he used to be able to get
a dropdown menu when hovering over a specific sender and be able to choose
ââ¬Åsee all emails by senderâ⬠. He used to find this feature very
handy
and asked if it is possible to get it in Outlook. Declan confirmed that
the feature is not there in Outlook and Cearbhaill suggested to use the
search bar and copying and pasting the email of the specific sender in it.
This should bring up only the emails by this sender.
Annette noticed that her phone screen yesterday stayed on all day and
night and it wasnââ¬â¢t locking when she pressed the power button.
However,
this
morning it was working fine. It was suggested that if it happens again,
she should power off her phone by holding down the home and power key
until she gets the power off screen. Then powering it back on and try
locking it again.
Joan thinks she has too many anti-virus software on her computer. She has
Clamwin and Glary. But Glary is very intrusive, so she is going to try and
uninstall Glary. Windows defender is there too and that should be enough
to do the job, but sheââ¬â¢ll have Clamwin there as well. Declan was
interested in the Clamwin anti-virus as a cross-platform, open source one
and will have a look at it before recommending it.
www.ninite.com has the Revo removal tool which is helpful in uninstalling
unwanted programmes on your computer.
Eamonn is trying to read a magazine that he gets as pdf in email
attachment. It is very difficult to search for specific words and navigate
through it. He tried bringing it into voice dream but still found it hard
to follow. He will be sending it to Cearbhaill and Albert for testing.
Martha also suggested to put it in KNFB reader as it is good at reading
tables. All fails he will contact the magazine and tell them that he is
finding it hard to read through the tables so that they fix the problem.
