Thanks, Stuart. Great notes indeed. Is there a Freudian slip in your salutation
at the end?
All the best,

Subject: [fb-exchange] Tech club notes
Dublin technology club notes 18th 2022
10 participants
Good morning this morning, I will be taking the notes for the Dublin tech club
as the usual note taker for this club is away. So, as you can guess you will
probably be in for a lengthy read this evening.
The hosts were having problems opening the door to let participants into the
meeting, the note taker thinks that they should replace that door at some
point. Martin dropped early into the meeting before he had to go to another
meeting at 11. Cearbhall and martin spoke about a number of different topics
including the choir. Other participants started joining the meeting at this
point. Martin told us about a story about his journey on the Louis and how well
they accommodated his needs. Cearbhall asked how to turn on do not disturb on
his iphone Stuart explained to him how to do it. Swipe down the control panel
and select focus mode to do this. The participants discussed the fantastic
weather we are getting this week. The door was still causing issues it took the
effort of two hosts to open it to let participants in, definitely need to
replace that door.
More discussion of the weather. Some of the participants said they liked it for
a brief period of time not an extended period of time. Some of the participants
took advantage and took the club meeting in the garden. Apparently, the
pleasant weather will only last to midnight tomorrow.
Joe asked how to access an attachment in an e-mail. He could not access it.
Cearbhall said he should copy and paste it to his desktop or into a folder. Joe
said it was not opening. He says he uses Gmail in outlook. Cearbhall suggested
saving the attachment as it would allow him to put it on the desktop. His
attachment was a PDF. Cearbhall asked if he needed a password to open it, Joe
was not sure. Joe uses JAWS 2022. Joe used shift tap to reach the attachment.
He can open it on his phone but not his computer. Cearbhall suggested also
shift F10 as another alternative method. He is full of suggestions today.
Stuart said that since he could open it on his phone, he does not need a
password to open it.
Mary said she used to have problems with e-mails before with winmail, she was
able to open it on her phone also. She does not remember how she fixed it. Mary
said she was on the audible website yesterday when she opened the audible shop
website amazon sent a link to her phone when she went to the link it would not
open. Apparently, she needed to turn off voice over to access this. She would
not have been able to do this without help from family members. She was also
under a time crunch as she had to do it in 19 seconds. Stuart suggested using
the rotor to find links and swipe down to try finding the link, Eamon agreed
that she should try this. Mary discussed audible for a bit after this. She
often needs help from her family members. Eamon suggested saving audible to her
home screen as an app so she would go directly to the website. To do this
select share in safari and select add to home screen. The discussion got a bit
technical here with topics such as URLâS and google accou
nts e tc for a while here. Amazon was discussed also here. Jackie gave us her
experience with the service. Jackie confirmed the link on the rotor was the way
to access those links. She was told how to do this. The rotor was discussed of
a while here.
Eamon asked about screen recognition and how good it is. Jackie gave us a story
of where it worked and when it did not. it did not work in Facebook but it
worked in an app called zoo+. Stuart has taken it of his rotor to avoid
accidently turning it on. Jackie gave us a description of what screen
recognition is. It reads apps that are inaccessible. Screen recognition came in
in IOS15. There was some confusion of the differences between it and lyder.
Albert suggested researching it on the Applevis website to learn more about it.
Eamon asked about resetting an iphone eight without losing the data. Jackie had
the answer. He also asked about closing apps from the app switcher where the
rotor appeared in the middle of the screen without disappearing. He accidently
called emergency services! He drained the battery to fix this problem as he
could not get it to reset. You can turn off the SOS feature of in settings.
Jackie mentioned the focus bug with voice over exasperating the situation with
accidently calling emergency services. The backwards z command was suggested by
Cearbhall and Jackie as a method to fix his issue.
Martin came back to the meeting after ditching us for a social inclusion
meeting. There was a general meeting of the national league of the blind
recently. it was a mass for deceased members. It has not happened for 3 years
because of covid. Martin and a few other members told us about the event and
what the National League of the Blind meeting entailed. It was extremely busy.
Discussion of e-mails and how frequently they come in was discussed. The mass
was apparently told by a new young priest. The virus came up briefly as well.
And attending by web cam.
Mary thanked Eamon for attending her concert last night. They got a great
crowd. Eamon also thanked Annette. A lot of wine was drunk apparently.
FFala Buggi is giving her presentation tomorrow, Cearbhall will sent the link
out to the FB list. It is an audio descript tour of the hugh lane gallery.
Cearbhall had high praise for it. It starts at 12. Tomorrow and will be a
discussion of a female artist according to Martin. It is not podcasted you can
only attend in person if you want to hear. Mary said she recorded her concert
yesterday. Her signal sounded like Aliens were trying to break into the line
briefly when she moved inside. She reckons it is because of her neighbours and
their wi fi causing the issue. The topic of WI fi was discussed for a period of
time here as well as well as streaming. VPNâs were mentioned also..
the recent sporting wins were discussed and some participants wanted to know
how to find the audio descript versions on the RTE players. Eamon said he was
going to e-mail to find out how to find this. The accessibility of the RTE
player was discussed now for a while, many participants find the RTE player
difficult to access.
Mary said she would get back to the group on how to access the recording of her
concert. Jackie song the cork tech groupâs praises as a fantastic choir whose
rendition of happy birthday is to die for. The visionary choir apparently has a
you tube channel if anyone wishes to hear them sing.
Martin said a social gathering in September costs one hundred euroâs to
attend per personâ¦
The topic returned to Maryâs Wi-Fi here with Eamon asking her specific
questions.
Cearbhall asked how the screen reader worked with Jamulus, apparently it did
not work beyond reading the menuâs according to Mary. It was not particularly
good. The choir is back in person these days so jamulus is no longer being
used. There are apparently ten dogs present usually as well. The group
suggested training them to bang their tails in unison to take part in the choir.
Seagulls are apparently a problem for some participants. Martin said the answer
to solve the seagull problem is to have a hawk to scare them away any bird of
prey will work. They are present at any event where seagulls may cause
difficulties like golf tournaments or tennis competitions. The meeting devolved
into a bird watching meeting for a while. Birds have apparently caused all
kinds of mischief according to all the participants of the meeting.
Jackie was asked if she had used a sleep app on her watch. She said no as she
would throw it out the window if she was woken up at 2 in the morning. She was
given some advice on how to turn of her voice over on her watch by Albert. You
can apparently set it to vibrate to tell the time. The app was called sleep
while you sleep according to Albert. The benefits of the apple watch for
tracking health were discussed.
Eamon asked about podcasts for navigating voice dream reader. Albert said he
had one and would send it to Eamon. Cearbhall agreed there was one before.
Albert said Voice dream scanner was the best OCR reader he knew because it does
not upload information to the cloud.
Cearbhall asked about accessing a music tutorial that costs 120 dollars. He did
not want to put in his credit card details as he was not sure if it was secure.
He was told to get sighted assistance or use voice over on his phone to check
if the website was secure by selecting the address bar. PayPal was discussed
for a while. He was advised to be careful with the website. Revolute was
proposed as a safe option for using this website. Jackie discussed how to use
this by accessing the card settings. Revolute changes fairly frequently and can
cause issues for accessibility as a result. It is an American course Cearbhall
wants to attend. He is being bombarded by e-mails from it currently. calling
them was also proposed as a method to avoid putting the card number into the
website if possible.
Jackie asked where she could do an accessible ICDL course as the one she is
doing is currently not accessible with her screen reader. they are apparently
attempting to create an accessible add on. Sight and sound and the NCBI WERE
PROPOSED AS WAYS AROUND IT. ECDL was discussed for a while here. Eamon proposed
to Cearbhall that he reach out to a blind musician group to get advice on his
website issue.
JAWS is on sale until the end of summer.
The remaining participants were getting hungry at this point. Martin regaled us
with his bloomer bread and ancient rolls. Mary said she should download the
Merlin app to identify birds. The meeting devolved once more int a bird
watching club for a while again. More stories emerged of misbehaving seagulls
alongside other avion troublemakers. The group wondered if a seagull would be
brave enough to take food from a dog.
The remaining participants decided to break for lunch at this point. The note
taker hopes that he has sufficiently provided you with enough reading to enjoy
during the remaining few days of this heat wave.
Hope you all enjoy the lovely weather.
Regards
The not taker.
