The more troublesome side of ChatGPT
Adrian Weckler
Despite how useful it can be, ChatGPT is now starting to create
problems. Last week, Italy banned it on data protection grounds; the
Irish DPC is looking into it now, too.
But it could face a wave of legal action for defamation and inaccuracy,
too: an Australian mayor is currently suing it for claiming, in an
answer, that he was involved in corruption associated with an Australian
bank (he wasn’t – he was actually the whistleblower in the case).
To be fair to ChatGPT, it does clearly say that its answers can throw up
false or inaccurate data. It emphasises that it’s not a search engine.
On the other hand, people are now starting to think of it, and use it,
as a sort of search engine. So it will be interesting to see how that
unfolds.
