VoiceOver

VoiceOver is built into Apple's operating systems. By using VoiceOver, the
user can access their Macintosh <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh>
or iOS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS>  device based on spoken
descriptions and, in the case of the Mac, the keyboard
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_keyboard> . The feature is designed
to increase accessibility for blind
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindness>  and low-vision
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-vision>  users, as well as for users with
dyslexia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyslexia> .

iOS

A few months later, with the release of the iPhone 3GS
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_3GS> , VoiceOver was added to iOS
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS> . When the iPod Touch
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch>  was upgraded to match the
hardware of the iPhone 3GS (in iPod touch's third generation
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch#3rd_generation> ), it also gained
VoiceOver capability. The iPad <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad> , since
its introduction, has also had VoiceOver capability.

VoiceOver on iOS interacts with the user by using various "gestures,"
different motions one makes with one or more fingers on the display. Many
gestures are location-sensitive-for example, sliding one's finger around the
screen will reveal the visual contents of the screen as the finger passes
over them. This enables blind users to explore the actual on-screen layout
of an application. A user can double-tap-similar to double-clicking
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-clicking>  a mouse-to activate a
selected element, just as if a sighted user had tapped the item.

VoiceOver can also turn off the display but leave the touch screen sensitive
to touch, saving battery power. Apple calls this feature "Screen Curtain".
It is also available on Mac computers running OS X
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X> .

VoiceOver for iOS is activated using the "Settings" application. It can be
found in the Accessibility section under the General section. The device can
also be configured so that VoiceOver can be toggled by a triple-click of the
Home button on the device.

Siri

Siri (spelt S.I.R.I. is a computer program that works as an intelligent
personal assistant
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_personal_assistant>  and
knowledge navigator <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_navigator> ,
part of Apple's INC operating systems. The feature uses a natural language
user interface
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_language_user_interface>  to answer
questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests
to a set of Web services <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_service> . The
software, both in its original version and as an iOS feature, adapts to the
user's individual language usage and individual searches (preferences) with
continuing use, and returns results that are individualized. Siri was
originally introduced as an iOS application available in the App Store and
which was acquired by Apple on April 28, 2010. Siri, Inc. had announced that
their software would be available for BlackBerry
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlackBerry>  and for phones running Android
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system)> , but all
development efforts for non-Apple platforms were cancelled after the
acquisition by Apple.

There are several accent and gender combinations for the voice of Siri.

Siri has been an integral part of iOS since iOS 5
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_5>  and was introduced as a feature of
the  <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_4S> iPhone 4S on October 14,
2011. Dictation powered by Siri was added to the third generation iPad
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad_(third_generation)>  with the release of
iOS 5.1.1 in May 2012; full Siri support was added with iOS 6. Siri has been
included on all mobile Apple hardware manufactured during or after October
2012.  Siri is also integrated into Apple Watch
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Watch> 's watchOS
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WatchOS> , where the feature can be activated
by holding down the Digital Crown or by saying "Hey, Siri." Siri is
additionally integrated into Apple TV
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_TV> 's tvOS
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TvOS> , where the feature can be activated
using a button on the included Siri Remote
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siri_Remote> .  It is available on all
iPhones from iPhone 5 <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_5>  with at
least iOS 7.1.  Siri was added to the Macintosh
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh>  with the release of macOS Sierra
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_Sierra>  on September 20, 2016.

On October 8, 2016, Bloomberg <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomberg_News>
reported that Apple was moving Siri, along with other Apple services, to a
new system codenamed Pie. Pie gives Apple more control over the system, thus
enabling potentially faster and more reliable services.
