Meta has announced that it is launching WhatsApp Channels globally.

The company described the feature as a private broadcast service.

It allows users to follow updates from celebrities, organisations and sports
teams.

"Channels are separate from your chats and who you choose to follow is not
visible to other followers," Meta said in a blog post.

"We also protect the personal information of both admins and followers," the
company added.

Following an initial launch in ten countries, Meta said it is introducing
some updates to Channels.

Users will be able to find channels to follow that are automatically
filtered based on their country.

They will also be able to view channels that are new, most active and
popular based on the number of followers.

"This is just the beginning, and we'll continue to add more features and
expand Channels based on feedback we get from users," Meta said.

"Over the coming months, we'll also make it possible for anyone to create a
channel," the company added.
