Despite the cold weather, everyone was in good spirits.
Clare reported on the NCBI celebration of its 90th Anniversary in Iveagh
Gardens, Dublin.
Chris opened with a wish to know how to read a document with Voicedream
reader on the iPad. He was faced with a paper based document which would need
to be scanned using the Voicedream scanner feature or using the document
setting in Seeing AI. The scanner was, until recently, a separate application
in IOS but now is available within Voicedream which makes it more convenient
to use. The Seeing AI function is useful for immediate results of a temporary
nature.
This led to a wide ranging discussion on the benefits and inaccuracies of
various scanning apps within IOS including Envision AI and Sullivan+.
The RTE Toy Show was in the air and attempts had been made to turn on audio
description in order to follow the visual content. After a lengthy
discussion, it became apparent that only the recorded version of the program
includes audio description.
Martin mentioned that he and Cearbhall had attended an exploration of the
Hugh Lane Gallery's Joseph Beuys exhibition led by Fala Buggy. The attendance
was quite small but it is hoped that more people with a visual impairment
will join in soon.
Ken was trying to register for an event using eventBright. He was prevented
from completing the registration because the app timed out. He filled in all
the required fields but lost time trying to find a way to submit the
registration.
Declan Meenagh conducted an extensive test of the voting system to be used in
the upcoming AGM of fighting blindness. there were about 15 testers who used
JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver or talkback. Declan was happy with the test and
undertook to implement all the recommended changes. In general, all found the
voting system to be very accessible
Ken was disappointed to find that Soundscape failed to identify the building
that he was looking for. The app reported all the neighbouring premises but,
for some reason, did not speak the marked building and he was forced to seek
sighted help.
Poor Siri is reported by all present to have become completely unreliable.
Mary Rose reported that she found great difficulty in using the various Pass
machines that are made available within shopping centres. She is comfortable
with her own regular machine but the buttons differ in these other machines.
Paul shared his experience and advised that she write down the buttons and
related functions for each location so that she might become more familiar
with each machine over time.
Stuart and Jackie noted that VoiceOver sometimes breaks down into a
stuttering voice. Jackie was able to overcome the problem by restarting the
phone. Stuart was unable to stop the stuttering and had to wait for the voice
to come back to normal.
The meeting ended with a flurry of hairy dog stories.
