Hello all, its not great weather today, a little cool for June.
There were 13 participants today and we were joined by Rebecca for a talk on
Wikamedia/Wiki Projects and Wikapedia
.
First of all, Annette had a problem in getting into the exchange club, and
after a chat with Paul, and later with Cearbhall, it transpired that the
problem she is having is on her own side , with internet connections in
her area.
There were 13 participants today and we were joined by Rebecca for a talk on
Wikamedia/Wiki Projects and Wikapedia
Mary has a problem, she set up a Whats app group with around 35 members.
She is the administrator and also appointed two more administrators.
She now wants to quit herself as an administrator. . She thinks that by
quitting herself, this could collapse the group completely.
Stuart investigated this and concluded that she could leave the group,
then ask the new adminstrators to allow her back in again.
This is what she will attempt, and report back to the meeting. .
Declan waxed lyrically about his new Head set. Called Steel, they cost him
around 300 euros,
And allow him to listen to clients in one ear, and can allow him to find
the rules and information wanted by some clients in the other ear.
This is a great example of a man Multi tasking.
We were treated to a lively talk on Wikapedia by Rebecca.
Some great facts
1 Wiki, is quick in the Hawaiian language.
2 Wikapedia was started in the United States in 2001.
.
3 There are two blind people who are administrators/editors of Wikapedia,
one in Australia and one in the United States.
And they have also set up a Wiki Blind Project, dealing with all things
like accessability and making sure that Wikapedia is WC 3 COMPLIANT.
4 Rebecca also told us that Wikapedia does not follow you like Google.
5 Wikapedia was started in the English language, and Spanish and Catalan
languages were next followed by German.
She explained that there are many many Wiki projects.
She says that it is very important that all things to do with Ireland,
should
Have people looking at Ireland from an objective point of view, and an
Irish view.
For example Oliver Cromwell in England is an anti Royalist and an early
republican.
To many English he is a hero.
But in Ireland he is anything but a hero.
Cromwell raped, murdered many Irish people especially in the city of
Drogheda.
He would be a hate figure on the Island of Ireland.
She explained how to edit a page in Wikapedia, and one must have proper
proof
Of contributions they are adding to existing articles.
Paul said that using Wikapedia for the last 15 years or so, he never
encountered a problem with links
Or accessability.
She told us of Vandelised pages, which are carefully watched,
And if a person corrects a false fact they are asked if they want to be put
on the watch link.
This is a link that a person is notified that somebody is editing that
page, and they can get to have a watchful look at any changes made.
This was a great chat and listen to an expert on all things to do with Wiki
projects, and was very very interesting.
Thanks to Rebecca to giving up of her time to educate us on Wikamedia.
That's all folks
Paul
