Hello Folks,
First of all, it is with great sadness that the meeting learned of the
untimely death of Mary , wife of Chris Egan one of our Cork members of the
Saturday exchange club.
May I on behalf of all members of the Monday Dublin meeting offer our sincere
condolences to Chris and his family.
May she rest in peace.
There were 11 Participants for today’s meeting.
We were joined by a new member, Adrian, and he is very welcome to the Dublin
Tech Club.
Adrian is an Android user which is good news to Ger , Bob,and Declan who are
all Android users.
Mary reported that she got entangled in a large over grown rose bush. On
her walk this morning. She went into the house of the owner and complained
politely about his over hanging bush, the man was very apologetic and asked
if she was ok, and promised to trim the offending rose bush. Well done Mary.
Adrian reported that he used to use Talk Back on his phone, but now mostly
uses Dictation to do his text messages on his smart Android phone.
He also uses what he calls Dark mode, that is using the contrast by changing
the background to Black colour and have White colour on the black, he finds
the contrast suits his needs.
Ger says that if one highlights text on their Android phone then that text
will be read out for them.
Vera gave a great description on the differences between Zoom and Magnifier
on the iPhone.
This was in answer to a question from Eamonn.
Zoom is a built in option which one can find in accessibility settings.
While Magnifier is an app which went turned on will magnify everything on the
screen, rather like a hand held magnifier.
Mary asked why she got no instructions from her favourite walking app, Blind
Square. As regards being told to turn right or left . Albert said that
the app does not give instructions about directions but just calls out what
road your walking down, or the number of the house that you are passing at
that time. In order to get the instructions that she wants , she needs to
click on the Google map, and then Google will take over and give her
information on when to turn left or right.
Blind Square has three options, the first one is the trekking option, the
second one is the Plan a journey option, and the third one is called
assimilation. This last option gives information on whats around you and
points of interest in the place that your visiting.
Blind Square cost around 30€, and it feeds off the regular Four Square
app. Blind Square uses Google maps, while Soundscape uses open source maps.
Cearbhall reported that Soundscape will be renamed Soundscape community when
it launches around October this year.
PS. Congratulations to Keith Earls winning his 100 th cap for Ireland , and
scoring a memorable try as well.
That’s all Folks
Paul
