Cearbhall has a new iPhoneSE2020 coming soon and this led to a debate on the
best way to clear the old phone and make sure that "Find my Phone" was no
longer active, if it had been in use. Bert pointed out that there are four
key actions that need to be completed:
Signing out of the iPhone, the iTunes store , the iCloud and, finally, unset
"Find my phone".
Both Clare and Jackie had a story to tell when they handed over their old
phone without signing out of "Find My Phone" so that messages addressed to
them appeared in the old phone, even though they thought they had cleared
everything down.
John has been using Android phones for years and now has an embarrassing
pile of old phones to clean down before dumping them. failing to find any
way to solve the problem with a mass conflagration, he turned to Declan who
was able to explain where to go in settings on each phone to wipe everything
completely. All agreed that the best solution was to send the lot to the
Jack and Jill foundation for recycling. Declan warned that nobody should
attempt to dump the phone battery as these are very explosive.
Mary was excited to report that audible.co.uk now permits users to buy books
from within the mobile app. Previously, purchases could only be made through
the audible shop on the web site and only credits could be used on the
mobile app. Jackie had to be tied down and her credit card sealed to prevent
her going mad buying books at the special offer price of £3 each!
Mary has a smart Ring video doorbell on her phone. The camera streams from
the house over Amazon. This lets her answer the door from anywhere inside or
outside the house. They have two phones in the house and found that when the
Doorbell was installed on the first phone, it rang perfectly and all was
well. Then, after installing the Doorbell on the second phone, they found
that it was ringing fine on the second phone but was no longer ringing on
the first one! Declan suggested looking at settings in Alexa and checking
the notification settings as well. Bert also has a smart doorbell but can't
hear it anyway because the dog starts howling as soon as the doorbell rings.
Clare was surprised to find that Siri knew her name and would address her
personally every time. It seems that Siri pulls the name from the Apple Id.
If you don't like the name that Siri finds, you can configure it with the
name you want.
Tom and Jackie told Clare how useful the apple watch is and how it reports
the heart rate and other useful details. They pointed out that the Watch
speaker is not great and that they have to use earphones to get the best
results. All are warned not to rely on this or any other smart watch for
clinical diagnosis of heart conditions as they are not believed to be fully
accurate. However, they do give a useful indication of trends.
The After Shokz bone conducting headset came in for a lot of discussion.
An excellent quality device, it is available in various stores in Ireland.
there are several models but the most interesting one is the AeroPex. This
is the latest and most successful headset in the After Shokz range.
Excellent sound quality with frequency adjustment, Bluetooth connection to
devices at the same time. Ut can answer phone calls, recall last phone used,
stop and start audio and jump forward and back in audio play mode. Built of
rubber and titanium it is extremely light in weight and sits comfortably
over the ears.
