Martin asked for an explanation of "Layered" keys and I undertook to see if I
could find a suitable answer.
I must admit that I did not know anything about the use of layers in
applications and had only a vague idea that keys could be used for different
purposes in different situations.
Since I began, I have found that programs are written in various layers that
connect with each other to make the whole application that the user runs.
There are very good articles on this idea of layers if anyone wants to
explore them.
In relation to Martin's question, I thought the link below would be the best
illustration of what "layers" means for JAWS users:

Simply put, keys that are regularly used to do familiar tasks can be bundled
together into a new "Layer" and given other jobs to do.
The JAWS way to call in such a layer is to press Insert + Space bar. Once
this combination of keys is pressed, a number of useful "Layers" become
available. For instance, "t" calls in the Table layer in which keystrokes
are given tasks that would not be available if you were working in the open
worksheet with just the arrow keys in excel, for example.
The JAWS OCR function is available after pressing JAWS + space by hitting the
letter "o". Here, again, a special use of various keys allows you to copy the
OCR result to the clipboard or read it back through your speakers, etc.
The control of the Speech function is managed in another layer by pressing
the "S" key after pressing JAWS + space.
