Rolando had much greater focus than I did. My less than stellar grades
combined with my "everything will just work out" mindset was a professional
disaster for me.
I remember Rolando as an on-air reporter before he was even 20. He was a
go-getter. I was print and had too much of a laid-back attitude. The old
joke was that I had a face for radio and a voice for print. There were too
many of us laid-back, ink-stained j-majors and precious few of the
hard-chargers.
I thought it would just happen. Rolando made it happen. It was obvious
that I was in the wrong field. Thank God for grad school.

(cough, cough) He actually created CÑÑ in Español, later CNN Turkey and
after that, CNN Chile. I caught up with him on one of my last biz trips to
South America. We shared a steak dinner together. Amazingly he told me at
the time that he still had to fly coach, CNN didn't pay for first or biz
class. Bummer, those long haul flights are awful in coach. Some
journalists made it, I'd guess very few at that level. Kinda like the NFL.
He credited much of his success to things he learned in Aggie Band. Ran
across an old magazine in my garage last week with his picture on the
cover. He is retired.
