When I attended the 2019 Muster in Paris, I realized the did not have “The
Last Corps Trip”. As Ruth can tell you two of my favorite thing to do are
sing Spirit, especially at a football game, and here / deliver “The Last
Corps Trip”.
One reason for this was having to answer for Pat Flores my first off campus
muster in 1978, Tacoma Washington. Pat often told me the only reason he was
on Corps Staff was so he wouldn’t have to “March in behind the band”
So earlier this year, I contacted Lamar County Muster Chair and offered to
deliver it at this years Muster. The chair accepted my offer.
Now, I have to tell all y’all of another Muster experience. Back in 2010 or
2011 I was going to be in Dallas on business on Muster. So I contacted
Eduardo Ricardo il hefe CheeseDick Tater, attended with him and Dwight
Henneberger.
Coach Stallings was the Muster speaker. And he also delivered “The Last
Corps Trip”, from memory.
I was blown away.
So today I had to call the Lamar County Muster chair to let him know I would
NOT be able to deliver “The Last Corps Trip”. I leave to go to Midland for
TEEX work tomorrow, for two weeks.
He laughed and said that Gene Stallings had visited him and volunteered to
deliver it and deliver it from memory, as he had in Dallas.
And then, he said, that Coach Stallings then recited, half of the poem and
stopped about midway. The he asked if he should finish.
I told the Muster chair, Coach Stallings was exactly the guy, I had thought
of to recite it in my stead.
We both laughed. And I only wish I could hear Coach Stallings recite it
again.
And, you can be damned sure I’ll be memorizing it, in case I’m asked again
to recite.
