$800 was nearer to 1977 than 1973.  I found a receipt a while back from
Spring 1974 - $463 16 hours tuition and fees, Corps Dorm and 7 day meal
plan.

Both my sisters and I were all at A&M at the same time - Their apartment
rate was about $200 per month, About $3000 for rent (utilities paid),
landline phone for the year.

My parents would send me back to school at the beginning of each semester
with a check for $4000 - $5000 to cover all our semester tuition, fees,
books, my dorm/meal plan, their rent and utilities, their food and
"emergencies". I had an allotment of $40 per month ($10/week) for
incidentals, gas, etc. and they each had a $100 allotment for food etc.  I
almost never spent my entire allotment and was routinely asked by my
sisters if I could "spare $5 or $10".

When I finally complained to my parents about them mooching off me, my dad
said "That's what the emergency money is supposed to cover."

"OH, Really!!!!  I thought that was only for tires, batteries, car repairs,
etc"

"We knew they wouldn't keep a tight budget and we knew you could keep a
rein on them"

Going into the Fall of our Sergebutt year, I had squeezed the emergency
fund up to over $1500.  I had it up to nearly $4K by graduation.  When I
cashed out the account after graduation, I tried to give the money to my
father.  He refused to take it.  He said I had earned it teaching my
sisters how to budget their money so he didn't have to.  Made a nice down
payment on my first house/property I bought. ($4K towards $21K)

Yeah, college inflation rates are higher than overall inflation.  I seem
to recall a semester of tuition, room, and board, was a total of around
$800?

Dean,
Inflation, tuition was $4 per credit hour in 1975. It's now 125 times
that.

*My understanding is that there are name changes at each level, but that
the scholarships presently give out 4% of the endowment, regardless of the

*So our Sul Ross, if it grows to $30,000, will pay out $1,200 a year.
$40,000 gets $1,600.  At $49,999, it would give out $1,999.06, but wouldn't
become a "Rudder" until it hit an even $50k through growth or gifts.*

Also remember that there is a "Rudder" level Corps scholarship also,
$50,000 that pays $2000/year.
