Ok. Wish it had been a spittoon but no such luck. KK and I roomed together at
some time. We leave for winter break. I got back first but believed KK had beat
me, dropped off things and gone out again. He didn’t show that night. Room was
a bit stale so I opened the window to air it out.
Saw that Keith had some candles on his desk so decided to light one. After
checking all three candles none of them had wicks. So sat in my chair to do
something. At that point looking bank at Keith’s desk and seeing the bottom
third of three Dr. Pepper cans I realized that his spit cans had blossomed
during our absence.

Here is a Jeff Maddox story for you. As a senior, Maddox and friends had
regular marijuana parties in his room with the windows open. First stoop,
corner room next to the band hall, where corps members walked past as they
went to the parking lot. CT’s were jealous and reported this rule breaking up
the Corps chain of command. Corps Staff got hold of Rob Spiller and told him
to get control of his unit. So he came to me, since Jeff was in B Company,
one of the best units in the Corps by the way, and told me to “handle it”.
Being the hard charging CO that I was, I went to talk to Jeff and company.
When I told them the story, they had that deer-in-the-headlight look of
guilty as charged. So I knew it was true by this reaction. My
“recommendation” to them was to take their parties to other locations outside
of Dorm 11. They were happy to agree and were amazed that nothing else was to
be done, at least this time. Problem solved.
Next story. I was like Ed with the spittoon thing. I had seen them in old
western movies and thought they were an historical relic, like the Model T
Ford car. But Dorm 11 proved me wrong. There were actually working spittoons
in some rooms around the dorm. I also found out later that some of our fish
buddies had to actually clean them out on a regular basis. What a wake-up
call.

If we're going to compare ditch-digging credentials, I think I win for total
miles of ditch dug. To be fair, they were irrigation ditches and I was
using one of the tools pictured below, dragging behind the tractor.
Not that I didn't use my degree in my short time with Texas A&M Ag
Experiment Station, USDA Ag Research Service, and farming on my own, but
yeah, lots of time with a shovel in my hand, or digging in the dirt with my
hands, doing welding, mechanic work, truck driving, etc.
Like the rest of you, not too proud to get my hands (face, feet, legs, etc)
dirty.
Unlike a lot of you world travelers and high muckety-mucks, not a lot of
excitement and big-time jobs. But most of my life, I basically was my own
boss, which was nice.
Of course, "being my own boss" discounts having to do what bankers,
landlords, regulatory bodies, etc. etc. told me to do.
But when the hired hand came to me and said "Boss, the little red light that
says "oil" came on, and three rounds later, the tractor quit," by golly, I
knew the buck stopped with me.
