Hello Toastmasters! I know I've blown past my self imposed deadline of sending these out by Saturday afternoon but I was in New Mexico visiting the grandparents. It was a relaxing and extremely meaningful trip. Without further delay, the Recap (complete with Spring-themed colors)! First, a reminder from Danielle and Anselma: What do Spring Training and Toastmasters have in common? They step up to the plate, amaze their audiences and hit out of the park home runs - And the crowd goes wild for it!!! Front Range Toastmasters Presents: International Speech and Table Topics Contest March 17, 2011, 7PM, Thornton Town Hall So here's your chance to step up to the plate and show what you're made out of. Sign up for the Toastmasters Speech Competition. Email Danielle Edmonds (Danielle.Edmonds@xxxxxxxxx) or Anselma Lopez (Anselma.Lopez@xxxxxxxxx). Include which category (International Speech and/or Table Topics) you are planning to compete in. * You must have completed 6 speeches out of your CC to participate in the International category We are also in need of umpires (judges) and statistic counters (timers) if you want to get some behind the scenes practice first! We had a great meeting this past Thursday. Bill Farrand, Toastmaster du jour, secured a new venue at the Baker Street Pub and Grill. It was a very cozy and comfortable atmosphere and I kept having to remind myself that I was in Westminster, Colorado, not Westminster, England. Great find Bill! Bill's theme was "Perseverance." Aaron Sturm Timed, Jeff Priestley provided the Word of the Day, "pertinacity," Lori High Inspired, and Marshall Barrington told was why Marines are superior to the Navy with his Joke. The three speakers of the night were Bob Cassiday, Dirk Kittredge, and Kathy Barrett. Bob's speech, "The Way," was about the benefits of martial arts, which include self confidence, control, discipline and self defense. Martial arts had a big effect on Bob when he was younger and helped turn him into the man he is today! You're right, Bob...I'm sure martial arts could do a world of wonders for a lot of kids. Dirk's speech, "On the Grid," began with cell phones, laptops, and credit cards flying across the room. Dirk entertained us with a speech about how it is nearly impossible to stay "invisible" in a world where society and technology are so intertwined. Gas stations, groceries, On Star, cell phones...we know what you're doing and where you're at! But the winning speech of the night was from Kathy in, "Fortune Telling." Congratulations Kathy! Kathy gave a demonstration speech on how we can create our very own fortune teller out of a piece of paper. Thanks for getting me back to my childhood Kath! When it was all said and done, we learned that Lori will be Grammarian one day! David Hassler, Table Topics Master, had approximately 200 perseverance-related quotations for us to explore and talk about. Well done, Anselma Lopez, for your award winning Table Topics on how you've gone against prevailing norms throughout your life to be that big oak tree that blossoms and grows! Adam Vesely, after reminding us that we were not "Postmasters" but "Toastmasters" (thank you Baker St. Pub and Grill!), jumped into our General Evaluation phase of the night. His crew consisted of Linda Sturm evaluating Bob, Amelia Autrey evaluating Dirk, and Lori High evaluating Kathy. Congrats to Lori for Best Evaluator! Concise meeting reports were appreciated by all. Ah Counter Danielle Edmonds passed along props to Jeff, Lori, Anselma, Amelia, and Dirk for remembering to put together complete sentences and pausing after those sentences, Arthur Jerijian tested our brain power with his Top 5 Questions of the Night, and Jeff Priestley, Grammarian, thought we sounded very polished, possibly due to the atmospheric pressure in the room. Great meeting...thanks again Bill! Have a great week, Luke
