I would like to express my SUPPORT of our Club participating in a debate. For the benefit of our many new members and those that may not have been present during discussion or updates at a meeting please consider the info below/attached. I personally wish there has been more discussion in the Club regarding the process & benefits? I support participation in a Debate and I would elect the CON (negative)side? though I think the choice should have been a draw of the straw VS having the choice to select your preference?. As Kathy mentions dates are critical at this point? according to the guidelines attached? if we go forward! Having Inter Club Debates IS a Toastmaster Classic! They are commonly done for the Enrichment of the Club?by virtue of individuals participating in the Roles and growing through the process. Rest assured Toastmasters provides a special Manual that takes the participants Step-by-Step through the preparation & delivery process. Just like working through your CC or CL Manuals, except in this case you are part of a Debate Team?that is then supported BY THE CLUB. You DO get CL Credit for many of the roles that are needed for a Debate. The attachment shows a brief list of the roles involved in a Debate. *The FULL Debate Manual IS available on the Toastmasters International Website? Our Front Range Toastmasters Club has participated in Debates (and many other Special Meetings) in the past. I personally was a Debate Participant and ? Initially I was scared, knees knocking and all! I am of the opinion that I joined this Club to grow, to do that I MUST face my fears and get outside of my comfort zone. I did just that! As the event all unfolded I was impressed with the process, the passion that was demonstrated and the efforts expended to pull off such a GREAT DEBATE! FRTM did in-fact win the event by following the guidelines to the T ?but I was MORE AMAZED Just how much we each grew through the experience! I was ready to jump right back in and Do it ALL again!! It was FUN!! We had many visitors from other Clubs that night, though other than the Debate Team/Support crew few of our own FRTM Club Members attended as spectators. Never the less, the room we meet in at the Civic Center was pretty FULL? the PR coverage pulled in members from clubs across the entire Metro/Summit area. I shared an inspiration last night that 84% of people have regrets for things that they DON?T DO? vs 16% having regrets for things they have done? Toastmasters? again I encourage you to plug into the Club, let your voice be known!! Some people may not care to participate in a Debate, that is OK? I believe there are many that will and they will Proudly represent FRTM. Just like ?It Takes a Village? This is a CLUB event! What is a Debate A debate is a friendly, enjoyable and beneficial argument between two teams - a stimulating battle of wits - which should entertain the audience. A speakers matter, manner and method is important and they will be judged by what they say, how effectively they say it and how well their speeches are organized and inter-related. A good speech is one which has excellent arguments and examples relevant to the team case and rebutting the points put forward by the other side. Each speech must be set out clearly and structured in an effective way in order to advance their own case with rebuttal of the other side's case. Each team has the task of proving that they are right and the other team wrong. This is what debating is all about and Toastmasters will find that by participating in debating, their skills of thinking, listening and speaking will be enhanced. The Benefits of Debating Debating is an art which provides an outstanding opportunity to develop the three basic abilities of the Toastmasters "Better Thinking, Listening and Speaking" motto. In this regard debaters must listen to the opposing arguments, learn to think very quickly, and express ideas in an attractive convincing manner which, in part at least, forms the basis of an impromptu speech. First of all?Pat, I want to thank you for your commitment and time you have spent with Simply Speaking in order to give our Club these Debate updates?it is greatly appreciated? : ) Nevertheless, each time Pat has updated us about this debate I see a very strong continuous pattern happening?and with the exception of Dirk Kittredge who volunteered to be a Debate Speaker? The pattern I see is: NO Response . . . No one is stepping up to the plate to participate in this Debate?which is perfectly OK ? we have a lot of new Members and there has not been a debate within our club for over a year or possibly two years? Honestly I do not know exactly when the last debate was because I did not attend that meeting . . . From: Tom Marrs <thomasamarrs@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: Pat Sanchez <patosnz@xxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, January 4, 2012 8:25 PM Subject: Moving Forward with The Debate Pat, I can cover most of the information in this email except for one thing: The Coin Toss. The Coin Toss - Choosing Sides We need to toss a coin to choose which club will be presenting the Affirmative and which will be the Negative for the agreed-upon Debate Proposition (Topic): ---- That the US should adopt Europe's 6 weeks per year vacation time. ---- I'll call you tomorrow morning on your cell phone so that we can do the coin toss. Debate Handbook Please order the Debate Handbook <http://webmail.rnldesign.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.toastmast ers.org/MainMenuCategories/Shop/ManualsBooksVideosCDs_1/MANUALSBOOKSVIDEOSCD s/GeneralEducationalItems/DEBATEHANDBOOK16.aspx> from Toastmasters or get a copy from Dirk. You and the Chief Judge will need this to plan for the debate. Roles Simply Speaking will have its members fill the following Roles: Facilitator (i.e., Toastmaster), Timer, Sergeant-at-Arms, Vote Counter, Refreshments Chair, and Debate Team. I will recruit members from my club to fill these roles. I will provide you with a list of our members who are filling each Role along with their contact information. Front Range will have its members fill the following Roles: Chief Judge (see explanation below), Timer, Vote Counter, Refreshments Chair (see explanation below), and Debate Team (please see the Debate Team section below). Please recruit members from your club to fill these roles. Also, please provide me with a list of your members who are filling each Role along with their contact information. The Chief Judge does NOT vote because they come from one of the two competing clubs. The Chief Judge recruits the judges for the debate and briefs them beforehand on how to judge the debate based on the contents of the Debate Handbook <http://webmail.rnldesign.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.toastmast ers.org/MainMenuCategories/Shop/ManualsBooksVideosCDs_1/MANUALSBOOKSVIDEOSCD s/GeneralEducationalItems/DEBATEHANDBOOK16.aspx> from Toastmasters. We should have an odd number of judges (preferably 3) to avoid a tie vote. We'll also need 1-2 alternate judges in case one of the judges can't make it. The Chief Judge will confirm with each potential judge the week beforehand to make sure that all the judges can make it. This provides a chance to get an alternate. This Sunday (January 8), I will send you a list of potential judges along with their contact information. In the spirit of fairness and integrity, the judges will come from District 26, and they cannot be a current or former member of either club. The Refreshments Chair fills the same role they would fill at a typical speech contest or other special event. They'll have a signup sheet and have members sign up to bring chips, soda, appetizers, dessert, hot wings, etc. As stated above, each club will provide a Refreshments Chair because both clubs will bring refreshments (so we have enough). The remaining roles (Toastmaster, Timer, Sergeant-At-Arms, Vote Counter) are the same roles as in regular meetings and club contests. Debate Team Each club will have a debate team. Typically, this consists of 2 speakers, 1-2 alternate speakers, and 1-2 researchers. The Debate Team lead will be one of the speakers, their role is to recruit the rest of the team and coordinate the research and practices before the debate. Darryle Brown is Simply Speaking's Debate Team Lead. Please choose a Debate Team Lead for your club. Meeting Location and Time I will provide this information to you on Sunday, January 8. Thanks.
