Dear Lori,
Last Sunday, the Denver Broncos surprised many in the sports world when they
defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. While much can be learned from
studying the game, in my opinion, a major reason Carolina lost is revealed in
the way their quarterback, Cam Newton, handled his interview after the game.
In this press conference, Cam Newton had an opportunity to speak and make a
profound and positive impact on the sports world.
In his 3rd year in the NFL he is one of the most outstanding quarterbacks in
the NFL. He lead the Panthers to a 15-1 record in the regular season and into
the Super Bowl. Many players play their entire career and never play in a Super
Bowl.
But instead, he has defeated
attitude.

He offers no hope,
no wisdom and honestly,
no sportsmanship.
Frankly, to me, he comes off unprofessional.
Part of being a "Champion NFL Player" is to be able to talk to the press in a
professional manner whether you win or lose.
When other greats like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning lose a game, they always
give some insight as to what occurred in the game, pointing out some positives
and respectfully acknowledging how well the other team played. More
importantly, they treat the press and the fans with respect.
Cam Newton had his three minutes to speak to the world and all he could do was
mumble about being defeated and walk out of the press conference.
Here are few things I have learned about failure from getting kicked through my
fair share of life's keyholes.
1. Our true character is defined not by how we handle success but in how we
handle failure and adversity.
2. You have to learn how to lose before you can know how to win. The only thing
that stands between you and success is failure. Once you can handle failure,
there is nothing between you and success.
3. The mindset of a champion is that he is never defeated. A champion
maintains his composure and continually assesses how to succeed.
4. Victories give us confidence. Failures give us knowledge. Too much
confidence and too little knowledge is a dangerous combination.
5. And lastly, as my mentor, Oscar, taught me, "The good lord doesn't give you
youth and wisdom at the same time."
Hopefully Cam Newton is a little wiser in his next interview....and Super Bowl.
