Hello Toastmasters,

Many of us at FRTM have had the pleasure of hearing Lance Miller speak in
person, he is a DYNAMIC speaker!

I subscribe to his newsletters… Since FRTM has so many NEW Members I thought
I’d share the story that I rec’d below from Lance Miller.

I felt the message was a clear one … and that there might be a general interest
especially with the newer Members in the Club.

Lance Miller Speaks

Dear Lori,

Telling effective gripping stories is a very powerful speaking tool.

For story effectiveness it is critical to get the audience to connect to you
and your story as quickly as possible.

The first "Act" in any story is the "Set-Up." This is where the speaker orients
the audience, setting the scene of the story. The Set-Up consists of the;
Who, What, Where, When and the Conflict of the story.

When done correctly the audience gets a clear concise concept of what is
<http://files.ctctcdn.com/861a8491101/54f918a0-d36e-4b81-98d2-11664aa725c6.jpg>
happening and is ready for more. When this basic information is missing the
audience is confused trying to fill-in the missing points to figure out what is
happening.

Here is an example from a speech I coached with a
"first act" missing critical information for an effective story:

"I spent the first five years of my adult life working in a steel mill. Despite
working swing shift, I enjoyed it. I worked 8am to 4pm for one week, 4am to
midnight for another week, and the next week, midnight to 8am. Eventually, I
began to feel a sense of dissatisfaction. I decided to change my life."

With this opening scene, the audience gets a general "idea" of what is
happening. But they do not get a clear concise concept of what is happening.

During the coaching interview I discovered there was so much more to this story
that really set it up for impact. Here is how we worked out applying the; Who,
What, Where, When and the Conflict.

"In 1975, I graduated from Pittsburgh High School - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I
walked out of my high school graduation ceremony and into the same workforce
that hired my father and grandfather.....plus my brothers.....my uncles.... and
cousins I barely knew. During WWII, it even hired both my grandmothers.......I
was a third-generation steel worker.

I worked the swing shift: one week 8am to 4pm, one week 4pm to midnight, and
one week of midnight to 8am, repeating. It was rough on my social life, but I
didn't care; all my high school friends were digging themselves into college
loan debt, while I was making as much as their fathers--some of whom were now
my co-workers.

I bought everything I wanted; a top-of-the-line stereo, I was the first kid on
my block to own a CD player - remember them?...great apartment and I bought my
first car, a brand new green and gold Pontiac Trans Am.

The first year was great! The second year was great! The third year......then
the fourth year... my best friend, Bill, graduated from college. We sat on his
back porch celebrating his first job with a couple of cold beers. He was
sharing his dreams of his future, where he would live, the home he wanted.....

I realized at that moment, that if I stayed where I was, I had already
accomplished every professional thing in my life I would ever accomplish.
I was only 22. I needed to change something...."

This second version sets-up the detail of where this is, when this is, who is
involved, exactly what is happening and sets-up a clear concise conflict to
impact the audience.

Give the audience the detail of your story so they can experience its power!!
