*Lance Miller Speaks*
Seldom does a speech I give come off completely as planned. There is
always a better way to say it or something more I wish I had included.
In life, things rarely work out as planned. There is not a day that passes
that I could not have improved the outcome had I worked harder, focused
more or planned better.
No one is harder on me than me.
But there are people among all of us who specialize in pointing out our
short-comings, our mistakes and our inabilities. They let us know how wrong
we are, how inadequate our efforts and how faulty our judgement.
Being around such people, I used to question my purpose and success. I
learned that the real mistake was to listen to the critic, to heed the
negative comment or accept in earnest a demeaning response. Such people
have their own self-respect and esteem issues.
I have experienced that those who truly want to help, do truly help. They
uplift, they encourage and they accent what is right.
If you ever question if you have succeeded, I share this poem with the
hopes that it does for you, what is has done for me.
*To Have Succeeded*
*To laugh often and love much;*
*to win the respect of intelligent persons*
*and the affection of children;*
*to earn the approbation of honest critics*
*and to endure the betrayal of false friends;*
*to appreciate beauty;*
*to find the best in others;*
*to give of one's self;*
*to leave the world a little better,*
*whether by a healthy child,*
*a garden patch*
*or a redeemed social condition;*
*to have played and laughed with enthusiasm*
*and sung with exultation;*
*to know that even one life has breathed easier*
*because you have lived,*
*this is to have succeeded.*
Ralph Waldo Emerson
*Keep Speaking, Keep Helping, Keep Succeeding.*
