FRTM - Recap - Meeting 10/25/18

The meeting was about Halloween! Specifically, the theme was Vampires.

As Toastmaster, Yours Truly included tidbits of information about both
imaginary and REAL vampires. (No, they won't be flying in your window,
turning human, and biting you. But they ARE interesting. YHTBT.)

I was assisted by:

Luis--Timer/Joker (Which type of blood really lifts a vampire's mood?
YHTBT!)
Savanna--Greeter
Monica--Grammarian and Word of the Day (Trepidation)
Kathleen, serving as both Inspiration and
Robin--Ah Counter, who brought a tongue depressor to the proceedings to
help us identify any secret vampires.
Katelynn--Gesture Master

Event Organizer Colette Smith did a superb job of putting together
decorations and helping me with the logistics. Food Chair Luis arranged for
us to have a YUMMALICIOUS spread, including diverse delicacies. Lots of
treats. No tricks.

Everyone present introduced themselves including their costume. We had two
guests: Savanna's husband Andy, who came as soap (no, not soap OPERA--soap.
YHTBT.) Also, Savanna's son Coda, who somehow got referred to as Dakota,
who came as *a box with teeth.*

(There was another, vampirish, dental business model discussed. YHTBT.)

Our first speaker was Bill, who talked about the marvelous and convoluted
history of superhero Captain Marvel! (It turns out that this character
keeps getting reincarnated in weird and wondrous ways.)

Our second and last speaker was Jennifer, who spoke about her friend Peter
"The Weirdness Attractor". Her story included real grave robbers, a drug
deal gone bad, a real (?) vampire, and a chase in the dark.

We had some Halloween special short talks. Delivering these were Katelynn,
talking about the horrors of haunted houses, Kathleen, with a truly
terrifying story about bedbugs, Lori educating us about tampered treats,
and Robin who talked about teenagers who are ho-hum about encountering
knives and animal carving.

Our Table Topics were led by Pattie, who had them nicely laid out on
pumpkin-shaped pieces of paper placed inside a trick or treat basket.
People enjoyed their questions, and even Coda came forward to participate!
(Aside: he later enthusiastically said, "I want to join Toastmasters!"
Unfortunately, at age 10, he's a little young, though some of us DO recall
that Dirk's daughter was the club mascot at age 11. Maybe it's time for
another?!)

Alan served as General Evaluator.

Bill was evaluated by Savanna, who gave a nice combination of praise and
opportunities for improvement.
Jennifer was evaluated by Colette, who did the same.

Alan called for reports, and all were competently delivered.

We closed the meeting after giving awards:

Best Speaker--Jennifer
Best Evaluator--Colette
Best Table Topics--Colette
Best Costume--Colette (Hey, wait a minute...did witch Colette cast a spell
upon us!?!)

Then Colette did a lovely thing. She called Coda up and gave him one of her
trophies as a keepsake.
